My Arduino fun projects: Part1: Electricity data logging system

in #technology8 years ago (edited)

I was getting frustrated with wrongful billing by the municipality and decided it’s about time I kept a record of my electricity usage. So I designed my own “Electricity data logging system”

Processing 2.1.1 application: No current LED blinks at 1Hz

Processing 2.1.1 application: Current detected LED blinks at 3Hz

Features and operation:

  • Prototype is built around an Arduino UNO (8 Bit AVR microcontroller – ATMEGA328P).
  • SD card module for data logging.
  • Real time clock which keeps track of time.
  • 100A current clamp measures current by simply clamping around the mains and only 5% changes either current going up or down is logged into the SD card as an Excel file (.csv) with its Time and Date stamp.
  • All the measured values are sent through serial communication via an FTDI to an application developed with Processing 2.1.1
  • The prototype has been upgraded to operate with a battery and without being connected to a computer.

Pending upgrades:

Prototype will be built around an Arduino YUN (AVR microcontroller with LINUX) which connects to the internet (via a 3G dongle or WIFI) and logged data to Google Spreadsheet through Temboo or even a cloud Pubnub.

The benefits of sending data to Pubnub which can be viewed in real time through the web or a mobile app.

I will then design a PCB as a final product.

Yes ; how so Kool for you . . .

But what does it ACTUALLY DO ? ? ?

I have seen these kits around and books on this Arduino and Respberrry Pi but how is it different from expensive electronic logo blocks?

I mean to try and understand how any of this stuff is actually useful ?

Congrats on your new stuff, no offense intended ; just more confused than I usually am : )

Do not electrocute yourself ; )

( I follow your tracking your electricity useage ) but why is this gizmo special?

You can of course tell I am not a " bright spark " of electronic intelligence . . .

Simply clamp it on your mains going to the DB box or even appliances then it records electricity usage. Yes there are many products on the market but expensive with extra features like mobile app...but the idea is to monitor and log your electricity usage and try reduce consumption as possible.

Yes exactly so this electronics kit you made is actually cheaper and better than a commercial product. Are these kits hard to learn or are they easy to set up for a specific project?

I think it is google time to learn more after Wikipedia . . .

Reading these now . . .

thank you for your time / hugz ; )

Very easy to learn. ..its C programming...if you go to www.arduino.cc there is a forum were people exchange codes and ideas to build more advaced projects with an arduino. My next post is all about Home automation which you can control your entire house from your phone and from anywhere in the world. ..exciting hei...I suggest you get an arduino and start with examples and you will love it...Im moving to wifi ESP modules and Pi 3 using Python. ..very fun...I need to build a Poloniex trading arduino bot which buys and sellls my trades with more profits and minimul risk

oh you can do that, geez kool : )

I am buying Steem atm and never though of automating the process ; )

i really enjoyed those simple introductions on what audrino is about, my last programming was many years ago, thank you for the introduction ! ! !
