Recording: set of microphones and positions that I currently use.

in #steempress8 years ago
Taking advantage of the opportunity to record the disc of my good friend Aída Rojas (@aidarojaswriter) at the beginning of this year, I wanted to explain the set of microphones for the recording of a drum kit. In general, I am always using varied techniques with microphones at the same time, but I am always looking for a specific sound, before continuing I want to clarify that the colors that you hear for the recording of the battery are quite dark and opaque colors.

I'll start by saying that the drum kit selected for this recording is a PEACE made with woods that generate a very opaque tone in it, which helped me when selecting microphones, as well as using an 18-inch snare drum that generates more body, so Both the brightnesses are less noticeable in it.

Kick or Bass Drum

The kick or bass drum was recorded with an electro voice RE20 in a tube preamplifier called universal audio 2-620, wanting more body than stuck of it, it was placed outside the front patch pointing to the center of the leather inside, in this way the necessary body was achieved without losing the punch, so the balance between the two was obtained.

Snare Drum

For the snare, finger or box, we use two Shure sm7B microphones connected to the same universal audio preamp as the bass drum on the top microphone, the second is a strange decision, since it should generally be placed on the bottom of the snare , but this time I put it to one side of it, basically by the dimensions of it, I could capture better body of the drummer and separate the bass drum, since to be so low would pick up a lot of bass drum sound in the channel, the latter was placed in a preamplifier designed by an engineer here in Barquisimeto named Marcos Figueroa and named after him.

Hihat

In the hihat use the same microphone shure SM 7b connected to Marcos Figueroa, looking for a dark sound and the smallest attack of the drumstick possible, as well as hihat were used 2 crash of 18 'for a rare color that we liked.

Toms

On the toms, use the center of the Sennheiser MD 441 microphones, looking for more punch or attack, than harmonics or resonance, a tom 13 'and a grenadier 14' of the same PEACE were used.

Overheads

In overheads or aerial microphones, 2 famous microphones called AKG414 were used at a distance of 96 cm in each one with respect to the snare drum without looking directly at it, thus avoiding any problem regarding the phases between them.

This was the session for the disc batteries of our beloved Aida Rojas, it seemed very cool to share these technical details with you, I hope you like them.
