Today is Mother’s day here in UK. The streets were very busy yesterday with people shopping and buying gifts for their mothers. It is painful as everything is so commercialised these days and to the contrary Mother’s love is unconditional. I remember an Indian story from many years ago, you might have heard it before, however I’ll share it.

*In a small village, lived a mother and her only child- a son. They loved each other very much and promised nothing should come in between them whatever happens. Over the time, their bond grew stronger and the child has now turned into a handsome man.

The Mother was excited to get her son married to a beautiful girl. Son refused to marry but the mother convinced him otherwise. The son got married to a beautiful girl, who soon realised that her husband loved her mother more than her. A feeling of jealousy entered into her heart.

One night, the wife asked if he loves her. The husband replied ‘’ ofcourse i do. I love you more than anything in the world ‘’.
Then she said ‘ prove it to me,.
The husband replied ‘how can i prove’?

The wife said ask your mother to move out of the house so that we could have some privacy. He went and asked her mother and she agreed immediately as she loves him a lot and left the house.

Over time, her jealousy became a fire and wanted to test him further. She demanded he gets all the jewellery from her mother. He went and asked her mother and she gave it him happily. The wife was still unhappy and still wanted to test him and asked if he loves her a lot, then he would get her Mother’s heart.

Though this was impossible, the son still went to her mother’s house and made the demands. Mother cooked his favourite meal and told him’ son, when i am deep asleep, you can open my chest and take my heart.

The son opened her chest while his mother was asleep and took the heart and rushed back to his house to give it to his wife. On the way, he tripped and the heart fell on the ground.
The heart spoke ‘ son, are you hurt’?
Hearing this, the son realises the unconditional and boundless love his mother has towards him and also the jealousy his wife has towards his mother.*

The story is from Grandpa chopra’s stories for life nourishment by Ashok Malhotra.
