Monster (Original poem)

Monster

It stalks
Hunting the beings that encircle him
Lunging wildly at their sound
Attacking in spite its blindness
They taunt him nonetheless
Poking him when his back is turned
The three of them working in unison
Pushing the envelope
Testing the boundaries

A mistake is made

Children scream as he latches on
Pulling his victim under
Devouring her piece by piece
Toes, ankles, knees, tummy
She giggles uncontrollably
As she is engulfed by the monster’s pelt

“Your turn!” He proclaims
While he sheds his skin
The blanket monster takes a smaller form
And she begins to stalk her prey
As the laughter ensues

One of the cool things about being a father is that you get to go back to your childhood at times when playing with your children. This poem is a characterization of a game I play with my kids in which one of us (always starts with me) will cover ourselves with a big blanket, get on our hands and knees and try to catch one of the others. We can't see from under the blanket, so we try to listen for the laughs. Once one is caught, the blanket monster must "eat" them by pulling them under the blanket...at which point they become the blanket monster and the old blanket monster again becomes the prey.

If you have small children, try giving it a shot. Mine love it.
