History

In 1873 the Dutch-American Steamship Company (NASM) was established.
In 1896 the name was changed to The Holland America Line (HAL).
Between 1880 and 1920 millions of European emigrants were transported by the HAL to "the new world" North America.

The head office of the Holland America Line was built in 1901 and was designed by J. Muller and C.M. Droogleever Fortyn. In 1913 the office was expanded with a 38-meter high tower.

Due to the relocation of the head office in 1977 from Rotterdam to Seattle, the building has been empty for many years. In 1991, the vacant office building was renovated into a hotel restaurant with the support of the municipality of Rotterdam.

The re-start

On Wednesday 5 May 1993, the former head office of the name of the building “Holland America Line” was officially changed to “Hotel New York”.
The nostalgic times of the bygone times of the Holland America Line are still present everywhere: the iron hotel staircase, the many suitcases and photographs of emigrants. When you step into the building, you feel it: here it is happening!

Hotel New York is located on the banks of the Maas. You can stay over in one of the beautiful hotel rooms, have breakfast, lunch, pastries, drinks with friends, Afternoon Teas, diners or even visit the Barbershop.
