Sunday Shopping - Grocery "haul" in Toronto's Chinatown
Hello, lovely steemians!
Last Sunday I had some errands to run, which brought me close to Chinatown, so I decided to do some grocery shopping there. I used the quotation marks for the word "haul" in the title, because, as you will soon discover, I didn't buy a lot of stuff to show you.
Chinatown is an interesting part of the city with a unique atmosphere, and there are many spots worth taking pictures of. Sadly, it was around minus eight degrees celsius outside, and I am not prone to taking my hands out of the warmth of my pockets just to take pictures, so the only one I have is of this mural/graffiti(?) painted on the wall of the LCBO store.
Side note: today's temperature is around minus twenty, so there's no way I'm leaving my house.
Whenever I am in Chinatown, I try to get at least one thing that I haven't tried before. My first stop was the Mashion bakery, which carries yummy pastries for incredibly good prices. Since it's cash-only, and I had very little cash on me, all I got was two pieces of sticky rice balls filled with redbean paste, which I've had before and a slice of tiger cake, which I haven't.
The tiger cake is a nice sponge cake with a bit of artificial flavour, but I liked it. When it comes to sticky rice balls, I prefer to refrigerate them before eating them, so that the texture is a bit firmer.
Here is the sticky rice ball cut in half. They also carry the peanut version.
My second and last stop was Lucky Moose Food Mart, a Supermarket. Usually it's very crowded, but clean and organized. Here's all the stuff I've got:
- Korean Cheesecake - I expected to be very similar to Uncle Tetsu's cheesecake, but this one is more like a sponge cake with buttery and cream cheese flavour. Still yummy, tough.
- Vegetable dumpling from the frozen section - the vegetable is Chinese cabbage and bamboo shoot, not my favourite, but still good. It's easy to prepare (45 seconds in microwave, no need to defrost) and great in combination with kimchi
- Kimchi - I took the cheapest one. Doesn't come in fancy packaging, but it's good.
- Some kind of instant ramen - it has ingredient list on the back written in english, but not instructions, so I will have to look it up :D
I don't get to go to Chinatown very often, usually only a couple times per year, but I am looking forward to my next visit trip there!
