Ladies and gents, boys and girls -
Call the police , ambulance and definitely a few fire units. ”The Fireman” has come out red hot 🥵with this message for the ghetto youths.

The man from St. Mary is here delivering a pointed motivational lecture in song. Many dictionaries define a ghetto as a slum. There you expect old buildings , bad roads, poor utility services and a wealth of poverty. I am familiar with these places.

My wife once labeled a place in Japan as ghetto and without thinking I busted out in laughter. IG you have not lived in a place like the one pictured above , count your stars.
Where one is born is not there fault but rather happenstance or mere coincidence.
The song refers to a ghetto state of mind.
According to The Urban Dictionary
“When someone is to be described as "ghetto" - it is used to describe that persons STATE OF MIND. "Ghetto" can be both a noun and an adjective. So, in this case, it is used as an adjective where white and Asian people can be just as "ghetto" as black people. Normally, this results from the poor living and upbringing conditions. "Ghetto" is a derogatory term used towards individuals who lack the standards of manners and ethics. “ (Urban Dictionary)

This is the connotation of the word ghetto , hence people might feel aggrieved when they hear “You are do ghetto.” Capleton or King Shobo as he has asked us to call him, has tried to redefine the term “Ghetto.” When most people make some money one of the first things they do is leave the ghetto and never look back. To the best of my knowledge Capleton is one of the few artiste who is a hands on figure in the ghetto-(he probably still lives there in August town )
“Call me ghetto cuz ghetto means get out!
Ghetto youths haffi mek it inna life and step out.” As someone born and raised in East Kingston, I wholeheartedly celebrate this message. This is one of the few songs where he is not burning out some kind of ism but is spreading just positivevibes on this roots rhythm. Don’t get me wrong , he’s not burning but his unmistakable baritone is still chanting out this tune.
The positive spin continues
“Call me ghetto cuz is means go getter
Ghetto youth go for your own,
that’s better...” As a product of the ghetto , one of the things I always hated was the victim mentality. Many people would rather sit and rub out their palms and refusing to work. This is the kind of youth who will not make it in the ghetto unfortunately.
The youths need examples of people who chose a different way of life from what is expected in the ghetto and made it. Hence, the “Phophet” gave them a few : He sited the wailers as a positive product of the ghetto and at the same time decried those who failed to step out and live up while offering more exemplary role models,
“Talk bout Ghetto you haffi talk bout Beres , D Brown and Alton Ellis.”
He rounds out his presentation in song my advising youths and adults alive to love their lives without watching the naysayers.
“Nuh watch di pagan when dem push up dem face.
Call me ghetto cuz ghetto means get along , ghetto youth fi mek inna life you haffi press along.”
Yes! Wether you are born in the ghetto or in a castle , your state or mind will determine your destination. As someone said “Attitude determines altitude.) Where you start is out of your hands but your destination is changeable. In the words of Garvey, made popular by Marley I say “ Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery , none but ourselves can free our minds...” If you mean that I am pushing for a better way of life and trying to lead a positive lifestyle then by all means “Call me ghetto.”
