Osaka Ska band: Vongsign
Greetings Reggaemuffins and fellow steemians. I bring you glad tidings of great joy. Last Saturday I had the pleasure of watching my favorite ska band in Japan perform live .
It is a band that I have shared the stage with on a few occasions, as they usually invite my band as supporting act and vice versa. The nine member strong band is called Vongsign.
According to “Pikufuru” the band’s trumpeter who I interviewed , the name is derived from the Japanese Bonsai trees. This Japanese style of growing trees is Praised the world over and is a symbol of Japanese creativity and wisdom. The Japanese have perfected growing age old trees not passing a certain height.

Why ska?
The band has been together now for about 17 years. They were inspired by a Band that was hot in their younger days called The Determinations. This was a popular all Japanese ska band of which my current band leader was a member. The Determinations recently came back together to do a one off show in Umeda, the heart of Osaka.
Meet the 9 members
-Abe plays sax and is the only soloist.
-Jun blows that trombone.
-Banna is on the Tenor 🎷
-Marshy- works that alto sax ,
-Pikufuru- gives the trumpet a certain sound
-Akai makes the guitar sing
-Kin plays dem keys ,
-Junichi plays the bass in haste and ,
-Morizo whips the drums in shape.
From what I can see , the band seems to a close knit unit. They have 1 EP out by the title “Da Hiru Sayo” which is a cover of a popular Philippine piece. The single is entitled “Cho” which in Japanese alliteration is the sound of ska.
You can follow Vongsign on

Great sound and good vibe live. Middle aged folks gravitate toward the ska cuz they don’t have to learn lyrics most time - just dance to the track. The youths generally lean toward dancehall and the choreography from the videos. I have to drop some ska beats and ting.
