Blue-Green Algae (Cyanobacteria)

in Steem Cameroon3 years ago

Algae are a small group of microscopic organisms that live in water called cyanobacteria. These bacterias are found in water bodies like lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. Cyanobacteria can multiply in the summers and are formed when conditions are calm. They look like scum on the surface of the water with blue-green or greenish-brown color and often smell musty or grassy.

Blue-green algae produce toxins chemicals that may be released into the waters, which will be degraded within two weeks. These toxins can be in the water for months at low levels after they are produced. The blooms are poisonous and can cause the death of livestock. Not all blooms produce toxins, but we can differentiate which is poisonous from the looks. So it is advisable to always take precautionary measures when dealing with cyanobacteria toxins.

How does it affect human health?

When humans get in contact with blue-green algae may be during swimming in water. Blue-green algae are categorically water-living organisms, and humans can swallow accidentally.

When this happens, we will expect situations like sore throat, swelling of the lips, skin irritation and rash, red eyes. we can go as far as to cause body weakness, liver damage, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, more fave, etc when taking in through drinking waters.

For these reasons, I say that all algae bloom with caution and rush to the health assistant if any signs show up.

How can I prevent algae growth?

To prevent the growth of algae is by limiting the amount of waste that has been dumped into water bodies. It is the only way to make sure we provide good watershed management to the water bodies while maintaining proper private sewage systems.

Take Back.

  • Avoid swimming in water containing scums on the surface
  • Avoid drinking water if you are not sure about the source
  • Call medical attention in case of any symptoms
  • Treat every algal bloom with cautions
  • Separate drinking water sources for pets and livestock.
