Brushing and Flossing are of the utmost importance in maintaining the oral health. Alone Brushing or Just Flossing is ineffective in controlling the tooth diseases like Cavities. They go hand-in-hand.

Although we have been taught right from the kindergarten to brush two times daily but very least have we been taught how to brush our teeth and gums properly, what type of brush to use, what toothpaste should we use and how much toothpaste should be used, why should we floss, and how should we floss? This Post will try to enlighten the right technique for Brushing your teeth. The proper technique for brushing should be Effective Efficient Brushing which removes plaque, cleans tongue, reaches to the every side of tooth, maintains oral health.
So lets get started with the journey on Brushing expedition.
There are many techniques for Bushing:

  • Horizontal Method
  • Physiological Method
  • Bass Method
  • Modified Bass Method
  • Charter Method and its modification
  • Fone Method
  • Roll Method
    Lets Discuss them briefly

Horizontal Method

As the name suggests it involves brushing the teeth in horizontal direction like we have been brushing conventionally as our parents and their parents did brush(if any). This method of brushing is very harmful for the gums as they tend to recede due to abrasive force of the brush which exposes the root surfaces of tooth, thus leading to the sensitivity of teeth. This method of brushing is NOT RECOMMENDED by the dentists, however, it is usually seen to be in practice.

Physiological Method

This is the simple method of cleaning the teeth areas where the food is generally caught up like embrasures (contact surface between two teeth). However this Too is not Effective and Efficient Brushing Technique.

Bass Method

This method involves the placement of bristles of toothbrush to be placed at 45° to the tooth surface covering area of three teeth at a time. The brush is then moved to and fro (20 to 30 times) keeping the bristles intact with the teeth. The sweep motion follows this and the brush is moved to the next three teeth.

Modified Bass Technique

This is the most common technique recommended by dentists for brushing the teeth. The method incorporates bass Method with certian additional points;

  • the bristles are placed half on tooth and half on gums at 45° to the tooth surface.

  • the brush is activated by slight to and fro motion along with vibratory motion and small circular motion which is followed by sweeping motion of brush away from teeth and gums.

  • the method starts from the back teeth region of one side to another side and also from inside surface of the teeth.

  • The inside of front teeth are cleaned by a vertical stroke of Brush.

  • the chewing surface of back teeth are cleaned as well.

This method is considered as Effective and Efficient Brushing Technique in removing the Plaque and Some extrinsic stains.
This method however is not used in patients who have receded gums as it tends to worsen the condition.

Charter Method

Brush is placed at 45° to the tooth surface and it is activated by vibratory motion and circular motion.

Fone Method

This method involves massaging of the gums gently with slight cleaning of teeth as well. It is recommended in the patients who have undergone surgical procedure of Mouth or Gums. This method helps in keeping the wound clean.

Roll Method

It is the simplest methid of Brushing. This method is suitable for the kids...as they can't remember the complexities of Other Techniques.
This method involves the Circular motion of Tooth Brush on teeth. A kid is taught to acquire this method by asking him to extend his arm and make a big circle which decreases in size in every turn and ultimately when reached at the centre...the now motion is used to brush the teeth.

Hope this have been informative as well as Educative post. I would recommend going to your nearest dentist if you face any problem and inquire about the various techniques and what technique suits for your teeth and gums.

What about those people who have some genetic problem with their teeth?
Do they also apply these procedures? Or perhaps something else?

What kind of genetic problem are you talking? Are teeth involved? If yes, what kind of problem is in teeth or gums?
