Homeschooling With Steemit!

in #homeschooling8 years ago (edited)

Last week Steemit allowed me to spend a bit of homeschooling time with my oldest daughter, @svitlaangel, in a way I have had chance to for a while. Currently, most of her studies are at a crazily high level math which goes way beyond my comprehension, so she turns to Khan Academy for her learning.

So how did Steemit help? Well, we kind of had a family Steemit day. I was running between computers at everyone's beck and call answering questions and reading through potential posts for grammar checks and feedback. It was a combined English and IT lesson with creativity thrown in. Even my youngest, @izzydawn, was seeing it as less of a chore and surprised me with some thoughtful writing instead of saying: “What should I write?”

I've been suggesting for a while that @svitlaangel should get an account, but her answer was always that she didn't have anything to write about. I did give some suggestions, which were generally rejected because until she's decided that something is her own idea, she isn't going to do it! She likes to have the suggestions, though, to help her to get ideas and make her own decision. So I left her with it and she applied for her account in her own time, on her own terms.

Now she actually has the account the ideas are coming thick and fast. She's been coming to me with article ideas, I've been checking through what she's written for any grammar corrections and suggestions. However, this involved getting up and down for me to read from her laptop so she set up Google Docs so I could access her work and make suggestions for corrections from my tablet.

For her the interaction with others, and I suspect the upvote rewards, are a great motivator for her to continue on here.

@izzydawn is much quieter than @svitlaangel, so it's taken her a little while to grasp why the social side of Steemit is important. I ended up relating it to meeting people face to face. When someone approaches you to say something, you acknowledge and respond to them because it would be insulting to ignore them; so when someone comments on your post it's equally polite to reply.

@izzydawn is at that age where she is wanting more independence and doesn't want learning to feel like work! So I've been including her with planning how she can cover the 8 curriculum areas. Steemit helps us cover English, the arts (photography), design and tech (I.T.) and a bit of maths (finance). S.O.S.E. (Studies of Society and environment, [although I think they may have renamed it now]) could be covered in reading the travel posts and reading about other lifestyles from the huge variety of people from different countries posting on here. Perhaps she could write about her projects too.

So thank you Steemit and the community for some interesting opportunities!

Pretty much what we're steeming for too XD And also the kids are able to spend any sbd they earn kind of via me (they can send me sbd and I can convert it and buy the thing for them if it needs to be ordered online or give them the money).

Now it would be nice if they would steem more instead of watching Youtube endlessly!

Lol! That would be about right! My eldest keeps showing me vines she thinks are hilarious. They really aren't...

Maybe we're just getting old in our old age ;D Back in OUR day funny things were actually funny! Stay out of my swamp you kids XD

What a great idea!
I wish I had had the opportunity to home-school my three children when they were school age.

Good luck for their success!

Thank you. I really need to start getting my youngest organised for the start of the new school year.
My eldest has just booked to go to England for 5 months, which is a bit scary. Was it hard for you when they got independent and left home?

I'd like to thank child labor laws for the coming influx of young steemians; who have no other income source.
They're going to take the place by storm :)

And I bet they'll teach us a thing or two!

Although we are a long ways away from school days, we plan on homeschooling. Thanks for sharing how you integrate Steemit into your curriculum; this definitely gives me some ideas for the future. -Aimee

School days come quicker than you realise and in my case they'll probably be over sooner than expected! My eldest has booked to visit England for 5 months. It's scary!

Oh gosh! I haven't even left my kids alone with my parents yet, I can't imagine them being as far away as England! Sounds like you're raising some independent and well rounded individuals though. Go mom! -Aimee

Thank you for the vote of confidence! Trying to look on the positive side of it now. Lol

Just a thought, but you may want to share an older post of ours called Social Capital: How to Make Friends and Get Free Potatoes with @izzydawn. I talk about how networking in the present can be beneficial at a later date.
Cheers, Aimee

Thank you, I'll do that.
