The Tulip Trestle
Yesterday my wife and I visited the Tulip Trestle, also known as the Greene County Viaduct. It is quite the site for around where we live and it is a nice place to have a picnic.
Built in 1906
The bridge started construction in 1905 and completed in December 1906. It costs $246,504 to build which in today's value would be more than 6 million! The main purpose of the build was to transport coal in the local area to major cities like Chicago and Indianapolis.
It is 2,295 feet long and 157 feet high towering over the trees spanning a valley between 2 hills as seen below. At the time of completions it was the longest trestle bridge in the United States and 3rd longest in the world. Since being built it has had no changes or other construction. That is certainly something to be said about the quality in construction and design back in the day.

Visiting the bridge today
There is a nice viewing platform with informational displays all about the bridge and its construction as seen in the first picture. If you want to go up closer to the bridge there is a nicely mowed path that runs along the creek that takes you up to the trestles, if you ever come to visit I recommend taking a picnic down to where the creek runs under the bridge and eat on the sand bar. It is a peaceful area with a neat view.
They still run a train across every day, I can hear it in the far distance from my house. I haven't figured out the exact schedule yet but I know it crosses twice between 6 and 9pm. Unfortunately I haven't been able to see it cross yet but when I do I'll probably post a good picture up. Here are a few more shots of the trestle from different views, enjoy!
..As always I hope you liked my pictures, thank you for viewing. If you enjoy my content please upvote and follow. I post and blog about all of our adventures and homesteading life. Until next time
That looks like an impressive bit of construction for when it was built!
I bet it was quite the feat at the time without modern cranes and such. It is very impressive to me.
Thank you for sharing this post! That does look like a wonderful area for a picnic. It's great to experience nature, history, and the company of someone you hold dear all at the same time.
It was quite nice, and lovely weather. I always liked reading the history to areas, especially the area I live. Thank you for your vote and comment :)
