The Homestead Sees Freezing Temps: It's SNOWING!!!!

Oh my gosh IT'S SNOWING!!!! You guys have no idea how excited I am. Living in the south was never our first choice. We love winter and snow. We moved here from northern Japan and while it didn't get below zero like the extreme north, we did experience A LOT of snow. Over 100 inches a year and the rural Japanese very seldom plow the roads.

We miss Japan all the time and I think we would feel a little better if we lived someplace that gets a true winter. Chris hasn't seen snow since 2015. I got to visit Maryland in January 2016 and experience the major snow storm they had. As I write this I keep looking out the window enjoying the beautiful white view. We will be taking the dogs out for their first snow experience when I'm done!

A couple practical notes because I'm nothing if not practical. We did prepare for this cold snap a few days ago. I put a tarp on one side of the duck coop because we have a broody hen that is going to hatch chicks any day now. 35 days was actually yesterday! I also put a heat lamp in there to keep her small bowl of water from freezing. I actually did this yesterday because it froze last night. Yes!! We've had a couple days of freezing temps! We laid down extra bedding and made sure the hoses were drained of water.

@minighomestead your mention of snow this morning on the front porch, was my inspiration for a post on Steemit, moments ago, I did tag you in it, in fact. You guys look so thrilled. Move to Canada for just a month and see if you still feel the same way...LOL kidding. I do love the snow too, but just not the deep freeze.

I'll go find it! We adore the snow and deeply miss the winters in northern Japan. We once got 24 inches of snow in 24 hours! It was amazing. But you are right it didn't get terribly cold just precipitated a lot

Happy Sunday! This comment is to inform you that your article has been linked and featured in the most recent issue of the Weekly Homesteading Newsletter! Please check it out if you have the time! Thank you!

Thank you!

Yeay for the snow! You seem to be enjoying it a lot more than your dogs, though! :-)

haha probably. 2 out of the 3 didn't seem to care much

Haha, your dog looks so perplexed (the two of you look delightful, though!) That first-snow joy never goes away, even though we get older, right?

That Japan picture has me shivering, and I'm typing this sitting next to our woodstove. My memories of NE Ohio Lake-Effect snow are still too near, apparently!

awww shucks, thanks

I'm pretty sure that's his defult look. You should have seen the picture we took of him in a santa hat last year. (it was his first christmas) too dang cute. Snow has a special place in my heart. I'm like Lorelai in Gilmore Girls about snow.

The funniest part was to the Japanese it was no big deal. They just made little ruts and you drove in those. In some ways it was probably safer than plowing because there wasn't any black ice. My parents live in northwest new york now and their winters are INSANE. I'd still take those over southern weather any day though! I know you guys are enjoying the more mild climate 😊
