What evidence is there that the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow in trying to sway the presidential election?

What have we actually learned?

It is easy to forget as Washington goes into full scandal mode that there is not a shred of evidence that anyone in Mr Trump’s circle knew anything about the Russian hack at the time, much less that there was any collusion.

Confounding words

Mr Trump’s words and actions may be confounding. But that is hardly evidence of guilt.

Instead they are a reminder of how we got here. Voters – with some help from the electoral college – turned against a tired elite with little understanding of the world beyond the liberal cities in last year’s election. The result was a victory for an untested outsider over the status quo.

Now Washington is pushing back, with Senate and House hearings, subpoenas and briefings.

It is already turning out to be a very good year for lawyers.

There may yet come a point when the scandal begins to resonate further afield but for the time being Republicans with an eye on next year’s mid-term elections say they aren’t hearing voters bring up the Russia scandal. On the doorstep they want to talk about health care, taxes and jobs just like they did last year.

That could change but so far the rest of America is tuning out the TV talking heads and their outrage.

So while one half of Washington lawyers up and the other half dreams of impeachment, the rest of America goes about its business. Oh to be a lawyer in Washington!
