The Snow Melts

imageba61f.jpg

I am following your footprints
You make them in the snow.
The snow is oh so deep,
But you help me as I grow.

The snow isn't always there,
the footprints disappear.
When I can no longer follow you,
My heart fills with fear.

Choices are my enemy,
as you already know.
You had always made them for me;
footprints in the snow.

But as I grow ever older,
the white fluff melts away.
You drift farther from me and
I'm more frightened every day.

You can't leave footprints on dry land,
not even if you tried.
You said you'd always be there for me
and I know you haven't lied.

But now sun is falling down
and night is sleeping in.
I almost forget the stars are there;
almost let the darkness win.

You told a little birdie
to fly away and find me.
You told the birdie a love-
filled message to sing up in a tree.

"Listen here, my darling,"
the little birdie sang.
"Don't give in to the bite of
life's sharp and brutal fang."

"Although now we're world apart,
I know you will come through fine.
Find yourself now;
Don't be scared, for your heart's stronger than mine.

I can see you standing here and
smiling away my woe.
Even though I cannot reach you,
I will always know,

No matter where I go
No matter what I do
I can think of you
And, like you always knew,
Survive without the snow.
