Who killed Salvador Allende?

in #politics7 years ago (edited)

Salvador Allende Gossens (1908-1973) was the first socialist elected for President of Chile in 1970.The official version of his death is that he shot himself during the military coup which installed a military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet in 1973. Allende started great reforms in Chile that were stopped by economic interests of hegemonic forces in South America.

Allende’s early life

Allende was born in a middle-class family. After finishing medical studies in 1932 he joined more popular Marxist politicians with which he founded Chile’s socialist party in 1933. Since then he had been active in Chile’s political life taking duties as a ministry of health or vice-president of Senat. Allende became known as a man who was always fighting for workers rights and very soon he became popular among lower classes.   He had lost three times in a presidential race before he was elected in 1970.

Chile in 1970

IN 1970 Chile was in crisis, Allende had to fight against high unemployment, so he started fast and energical reforms. As he was socialist, firstly he nationalized all foreign banks, then he started with nationalizing all mines and big companies that mostly were owned by the USA, also land was taken from great landowners and divided to poor people. Allende had frozen prices and increased wages. His reforms were very popular among people. The results were excellent, in 1971 economic growth was 7,7%.  Chile was looking as a country with great future, but with Allende's reforms interests of Chilean elite and USA were endangered.

Crisis

Chile was finding new partners in communist countries so Allende visited Cuba and USSR. In the time of ColdWar U.S couldn’t tolerate communist country in South America. So they started financing Chilean opposition in order to destabilized Allende’s regime.  Mass strikes were organized across the whole country. Chile was a paralyzed, the economic situation went worst day by day, streets of Santiago were full of violence and insecurity. The USA wanted to speed up Allende's fall so they put an economic blockade of Chile, also they influenced to World Bank to stop approving credits to Chile. In order to make peace in country Allende started with new social reforms but they just made the situation even worse. High inflation and shortages were destroying Chilean economy. But people were still on Allende’s side. The USA had to react.

With CIA help general Augusto Pinochet organized military coup on 11th September 1973. Mass persecutions and killing marked start of new dictatorship regime. About   250 000 people left Chile and about 11000 were missing.

Allende was found dead in president palace. The official version of his death is that he shot himself, but is it real death? I will rather say that Allende didn’t die on that 11th September. He was dead in the heads on his enemies for months and years and it is not important was he really the one who pulled the trigger, the killer is one that put that ‘’pistol’’ on his head.
