Portrait made by a student... can you tell who it is?
In my classes not long ago we focused on the complexities of the human face and how it is a real skill to be able to draw people in a way that it actually looks like the person in question. The human face has so many intricacies that can make replicating a face extremely difficult even if you are looking at a photograph at the same time. Being able to do it from memory is a skill very few possess and while the student in this particular situation was looking at a photo while he was doing it, I am very impressed with the end result. I wonder if any of you out there can tell who it is that he was drawing?
I particularly enjoy how the detail on the wrinkles around the eyes are so detailed here and I knew right away who it was.
The student asked me if I think that he should add more detail and I hesitated to answer that. It really isn't up to anyone else when your work is "finished" and since he was using pencils there's no such thing as having gone too far. For me, I think that the work is good in its current form and doesn't really need any color. It will be interesting to see what they decide. Either way i am already impressed and am very happy that this particular student is showing not just ability, but also a real desire to do well in this skill.
