My friend owns three antique pianos and a copy of a harpsichord. Although the piano was invented around 1700, it didn't become popular until around 1770. Before that, from about 1500, the harpsichord (cembalo in Italian or clavecin in French) was the most common keyboard instrument. This means that for baroque music like Bach, Handel or Scarlatti, the harpsichord and not the piano is the correct instrument. It sounds very different because the strings are plucked like a harp when you press a key.

My friend owns a copy of a French harpsichord by Donzelague from 1711, a Longman and Broderip English square piano from 1785, an 1845 Pleyel grand piano like that owned by Chopin and an 1875 Erard grand piano. They all sound very beautiful but different.
