The Phenomenon of the Yolo Millennial Generation
So it turns out that at my age, yolo, the way of saying it is different, and that is indeed the language of today's youth. You only live once, we only live in this world once, most people initially said that yolo actually brings many negative sides. So while we live once, let's make this life as we please, while we are still alive, bro. Just do what we want.
Well, actually, on average it's like that, but if we have faith, we believe in meeting God one day, this yolo is not only negative. But it will also be positive. We make yolo a life that is once, and we make this life a useful life. So yolo depends on how we deal with it. But many young people actually use yolo as an excuse for them to be more consumptive, to be better.
So for example, traveling, going abroad, refreshing, even though the money is still in debt, right? Or even at the beginning when you just get your salary, you immediately hang out, make a fuss, spend it, even though you still haven't paid for your boarding house, for example, and so on, so on, and finally it feels bad. Okay, before discussing it further, I want to ask you, what is our purpose in life? We want to be successful, some want to get married, then want to be rich.
Okay, let's make everything easy, so like this, we want to be rich, some want to make their parents happy, then some also want to go to heaven, then be successful of course, and then the goal is to get married. But back again we see, why are we successful, why are we rich, why do we make our parents happy, why do we go to heaven, why do we get married, it turns out the answer is one, what do you think, does anyone know the answer?
The answer is one word, namely Happiness.
And this is what causes today's millennial youth to spend their time, to then become consumptive people. Because they are looking for happiness, and finally yolo is used as a principle to make the wrong happiness, which is consumptive, that's more or less like that. We all want to be happy, we all want to have fun, and it doesn't mean we can't have fun, we can't spend our money on snacks, it's not like that either, but it all has to be planned.
So actually yolo, if we connote it, most young people, especially in Indonesia, consider yolo to be something negative. We only live once, let's do crazy things, let's shop for this and that, that thing is cute, let's buy it. Because if you don't buy, you can't sleep. It seems like there are a lot of girls.
Well, usually women and men have different shopping hobbies. The difference is that women usually spend a lot on their appearance, while men spend a lot on their hobbies. The millennial generation in Indonesia does two things, they have different values than the previous generation.
If the previous generation, the most important thing for them was security, cars first, vehicles first and so on, well, for the millennial generation now, it's lifestyle. So lifestyle, while we only live once, we experience working in various places, that's probably positive, enriching experiences. But sometimes not in one place, at most they work, only work for 6 months, then it's different again, there are those like that, there are other desires, for example traveling to that one Asian country is much more than saving for the future, something like that, I think.
What they are after is experience, if I live like this, let me give you an analogy, actually I can buy coffee that's okay, at a reasonable price.
But because they prioritize an extraordinary lifestyle, that's why they pay more for that lifestyle. And this was also proven some time ago, there was a survey. This survey, or a headline article, we can see that shows that 18% of millennials can't buy a house, they can't afford it. So only 17% of millennials can afford to buy a house in Jakarta. This is the result of a survey conducted by rumah 123.com, and also karir.com.
Well, the millennial generation tends to have low financial awareness, and money planning, minimal financial literacy. But this is it, the principle is like this, the current condition is that house prices often increase, it is often much higher, than the increase in their income as employees. So once again in Indonesia, house prices are much faster than the increase in first-level income. So it's not entirely the millennials' fault, millennials' needs are not like in the past, where security was important, so house prices have increased much faster, compared to income increases.
The values of today's young people are lifestyle, so both play an equal role. Hopefully, this survey will make the millennial generation aware that it's okay for us to pursue that lifestyle, as long as it's positive, and don't forget security too. So from here we can conclude that indeed life is only once, lifestyle is allowed, not wrong, because it's one part of enjoying life. But you have to be able to manage it, don't let important things end up not being obtained.
So, the best human beings are those who are useful to others, the more useful we are, the more valuable we are in the eyes of God and humans. This is the principle of yolo that we hold, so you only live once. So be useful to others, and the continuation is, the more useful we are, the more valuable we are, the price in the eyes of God, and in the eyes of fellow humans. Hopefully it will be useful.
Greetings always compact.
