Tuitions were unheard of our time, the prewar and immediate-post-war. They crept in, as far as I can faithfully recall, only after 1962-63 academic year. Before that, our teachers were good enough to finish the prescribed course within their allotted time in their teaching schedule. Even if some of us fail badly in one subject in a monthly test the teacher of the subject concerned would give us an extra coaching during our lunch break. The teacher had to defer her lunch; but we missed it altogether.
So we never knew there was something called 'tuition'. But my sons and daughters had it. Our teachers, as a rule, refused to accept personal presents offered by individual students. They were only happy to receive multilateral gifts which we usually offered on our respect-paying ceremonies connected with religious occasions like fullmoon of Dazaunmon.
