Very happy boy playing rugby.
Sitting here on my rock, I suddenly remembered a child that had so much rugby talent, it was unbelievable.
There was only one problem, he use to get bad epileptic fits.
This made it a hard thing for him as he really wanted to play rugby like a Springbok.
We tried everything, until we found a doctor who gave him medicine that really helped.
It did not always help but most of the times he was okay during a game if he took his pills.
But we all know children, and they do forget things when they are excited.
I decided that I would keep them with me during a rugby game and if it seemed as if he had a problem, I would run onto the field to help him.
He was so good at the sport and it really broke my heart that he was not actually allowed to play.
His parents gave permission for him to play and they knew that I would look after him as good as I could.
He was such a star and I do not know how many games he won for us.
I did something, I was not supposed to by not telling the selectors of the team that he had epilepsy. I really made a point of always giving him his pills and we did not have any problems.
Not that I was not worried as I kept this a secret just to keep this child happy. He could add points to a game like no one else I knew.
In the process he was picked as a provincial primary school player and he was the happiest child in the world.
He played wonderfully and did so well until one of the teachers found out that he had this problem, and said we cannot take a chance with a child like this to play as he might have an attack and there will be no help.
I do realise that it is so true, but at least he had the privilege to play when he was younger and really enjoyed it.
I know it is something that I should not have done, but as I said, I was always nearby and knew exactly what to do if something happened.
But unfortunately he never got the chance again to play.
This is one story that I have kept secret for so long, but I can assure you that the happy boy that I saw so many times win a game, made it all worth it.
Sometimes especially because the parents knew and had given me permission, I do not feel bad as a happy child is the most wonderful experience that any person can feel.
