Liftoff with a New Energy Source

in #business8 years ago

What is that fuel source widely available in the universe?

Water. Yes, water can be found in almost every corner of the universe hence the energy source that could fuel space exploration.

Mikhail Kokorich, the founder of Momentus, a new Y Combinator-backed propulsion technology developer for space flight, hadn’t always dreamed of going to the moon. A physicist who graduated from Russia’s top-ranked Novosibirsk University, Kokorich was a serial entrepreneur in who grew up in Siberia and made his name and his first fortunes in the years after the fall of the Soviet Union. The heart of Momentus’ technology is a new propulsion system that uses water as a propellant instead of chemicals.

Space travel takes several months, years even centuries depending on how far your rocket can go. Apart from speed, the other thing that limits us from exploring our solar system and beyond is energy source. There's a limit to how much you can carry as fuel. Take for example the airplanes. After a long trans atlantic flight it needs to refuel before going back. Now the distance is only drop in the ocean compared to the journey to the Moon or Mars. And these are the closest planet/satelite that we can travel to.

Imagine flying to outer space. To a point of no return. What a waste it would be if you have the technology to explore the limits of the universe but you ran out of fuel. More here
