Photography : Tomato Flowers - The Difference Between Cherry Tomatoes & "Beefsteak" Tomatoes

Beefsteak Tomatoes ( Fleischtomaten)

This variety is oftentimes huge, round, juicy tomato that is used for cooking, grilling and even roasting. I use this type for gratin mostly with cheese toppings and I simply roast them in the oven.. Of course, it can be eaten as snack or raw or as addition to a burger together with cheese in a bun. Since it is huge in size, it normally takes longer to become ripe.

Looking at the translation of the german term Fleischtomaten... it is translated as beefsteak tomato. Every year I would buy the sort cherry tomatoes or cocktail tomatoes, the really small type that looks like berries that I preserve in olive oil. This year, I decided to try the variety beefsteak tomato. They are huge and sometimes could weigh almost half kilo for a single fruit. Normally cultivated for sandwich making, they are aromatic especially those we have in burgers that we buy in fast food centers.

Flowers - The Difference between The Two Varieties

Flowers of the cocktail tomatoes are smaller and have few petals and once the fruit develops, it becomes rounder in shape and its skin is robust. It is the most popular sort in almost all european countries. They are good to use as toppings for pizzas.

The flowers of the beefsteak tomatoes are normally larger and have many petals. Its fruit is more likely to develop the rib-like shape or simply a huge round juicy and aromatic fruit. To make sandwiches, a slice is more than big to cover the whole bread.

The following images below are macro shots I took from the two potted beefsteak tomatoes I am presently growing. Based on the photo of its fruit, in the beginning it is elongated and later they might either become a huge round one. At the moment, they also grow to be as tall as the bush of the cocktail tomatoes. I can only tell which is which based on the flowers of each one.

I am eagerly waiting for the first huge harvest and will be crossing my fingers that my four potted tomatoes will be blessed to yield many of these God given fruits that are very healthy.
