3D Ball - original drawing by @merej99
I am fascinated by 3D art. Being quite the novice and knowingly without a lot of quality tools, I do the best I can with what I have.
Today I wanted to make a small attempt at 3D drawing. Being all about the K.I.S.S. theory (Keep it Simple, Stupid), I chose to draw a ball.

This is my favorite angle of the drawing.
The process:

I started off drawing lines across the page. Then using the compass, drew a circle. I wanted to have varying line widths, which is present, but I think the next time I'll try to make it more noticeably different. Then using the compass again, I tried to connect the lines from either side of the orb with arches.

After erasing the straight lines in the orb, I began playing with shading to get a proper 3D effect because the play on light is what really helps seal the deal.It took a few tries to get the basic shadows.

Once satisfied that I was on the right track, I took my purple metallic gel pen and traced the lines, circle and arches. Then I took my black colored pencil and worked the shadows again. This took a while because I wasn't very happy with the results.Having had a little temper tantrum, I was about to reject it and put it aside. That's when I realized it had the effect I was looking! When I was right on top of it, I didn't have the degree of 3D-ness I was hoping for - but placed off to the side was a different matter!
It's not perfect...

...but neither am I.
And here I am posing with it anyway. :)

it's always a good idea to keep stepping back. I love the effect and the act you just did your way.. you really should start getting comfortable with calling yourself an artist.
LOL - I can't! It's weird for me. It's like I'll call myself a writer - but will rarely say I'm an author. Isn't that strange? And hubby just plunked me on the side of the head and told me to sign the damned thing. :o?
lol I'm not comfortable saying it myself so lets make a deal, I'll sign my next one if you sign this one.
LOL. Okay. But it's still weird...
Looks really good, well done :)
Thanks Karen! I still think you should grab some pens and doodle. Come play with us!
I have started to doodle but my doodles don't look like your doodles, my doodles would fit on a nursery wall... yeah there that bad
DOH!
Read comment to @countrygirl!
I am not a skillful 3d technician, but I know if I like something and I like this job.
On the other hand my friend @ merej99 to tantrums you have to take them calmly, tells you a person who knows tantrums, in the end things are always where they should be. Congratulations on your hard work.
Thank you @jlufer - my tantrums are usually in my head so my imagination can chop off heads and break stuff. LOL But you are absolutely correct - things always end up where it ought to be. XOXOX
Very cool!
Have you ever seen the sidewalk artists that do this? Amazing!
Also, have you ever drawn stereo pairs? When I was a kid, I'd get 3D comic books in my boxes of cereal, along with a pair of red and blue glasses. When looking through the glasses, each eye sees a different image. This is called anaglyph 3D.
I studied the blue and red pictures in the comics (they were all essentially line drawings) and observed that objects at different depths were spaced differently...
You might have fun getting yourself a pair of those glasses and sketching some eye-popping images. ;)
What a very cool idea! My eyes are already screwy so that play on red and blue would be a blast! LOL I remember those days with 3D movies and the hidden messages on the backs of cereal boxes.
I'm actually practicing a little 3D because I have a scene that I want to draw inspired by one of the chapters I wrote for Her Leading Man...which is waaaay beyond my skill level at the moment. But I love the 3D sidewalk art! With my perception and balance, If I ever came across one, I'd probably have to skootch across it on my butt. LOL
One of these days maybe I'll do a writeup on hand-drawn anaglyphs... Careful there, you may have inspired me... ;)
That would be so COOL! I can't wait to read it :D
Looking very cool.
I have such visions but my skill level is lacking. LOL
It turned out very well!
Not bad for a rusty hand. I'm usually my own worst critic, but thank you for the ego boost :)
You bet. I custom-build countertops, which is actually an art form. While I receive no complaints from people who pay me, I pick my work apart and feel ashamed of tiny imperfections.
You...custom build...countertops??? That is so freakin' COOL! I think we need t-shirts: Girls love power tools. LOL
And what is "perfection" anyway? I had a good conversation with @klye about embracing our imperfections (or maybe I called them our oddities or weirdness). Perfection doesn't exist.
And @phoenixmaid & @opheliafu have taught me, especially with art, to get rid of the white out and just roll with the "mistakes". You never know where it's going to take you. :)
Yes, I plan on making a post about my acrylic solid surface countertops in the future. And I agree, perfection does not exist. I try too hard to achieve it and I only end up disappointed! Those would be some awesome T-shirts!!
That's simply amazing. You downplay your talents my dear.
I really do wish I had more skill to show what's in my head. Have you ever seen the stuff they can do with VR painting? It's quite astonishing and super cool. I need me something like that!
I feel like that with my photography...and I am super shy to show it because I feel so inadequate compared to others. But that's the trap isn't it? In comparison.
I LOVE that Tilt Brush - I can see why you'd love that.....it would make me uber dizzy but that's another story. Maybe you need to write a post about this Tilt Brush in the new #TIL? It would be "Trump Huge".
Hmm... Inspiration for a post that isn't art and fiction! It's been a while since I've done one of those! LOL Yeah, I would probably get really dizzy and fall over. I can't even play 3D games with my boys.
Stop comparing!!!
That's the worst trap you could ever do. Share the photos. Write something about it and use the proper tags. And I am about 99.999% sure that if you asked for suggestions on how to improve the shot, the photo gurus would hop right in. I can't even begin to tell you how much my writing and art has improved simply because I put it out there....or maybe I've just gotten to the point where I don't care what anyone thinks because I'm enjoying the hell out of myself? Tomato/Tomahto
Just do it! I double dog dare you.
I know what advice they would give be... put that pencil down and walk away lol
nice work, mere. I try to make my characters leap off the page
Looks pretty good to me.
3-d and everything! I'm going to try this
You definitely should! Try cans and squares too. I personally think triangles are harder but I haven't tried since high school (almost 30 years ago). LOL
