The Traditional Wedding
It was time for our traditional wedding which we also call engagement ceremony.
It is a period where dowries are paid and marital rites are performed, it is after this ceremony that the bride and the groom can be officially called a couple according to the Yoruba culture.
The groom's family are expected to come early to the event as delay could end the wedding procession, the groom comes on time and they are introduced to the bride's family by the moderator after which they will kneel down and prostrate as a sign of respect to the prospective in laws.
An elaborate and well designed proposal letter is read to the bride's family and they in turn read out a letter of acceptance to the groom's family as well.
The groom dances into the venue of the event in the company of his friends and himself and his friends are made to prostrate before the bride's family three times after which prayers are been made by the bride's family for the groom and his prospective bride.
The bride then dances in in the company of her friends with a veil over her head, she kneels before her parents who prays for her and sends her forth and then she goes to the grooms family who prays for her as well and she joins her husband who then unveils her.
The bride is made to choose an item from the numerous gifts brought by the groom's family , it is customary for her to either choose the Bible or Quran according to her faith or belief.
The bride price is then paid to the bride's family by the groom's family according to custom.
Cutting of the cake which signifies happiness and joy to the marriage and final prayers are been made to end the wedding program.
The remaining part of the day will be spent on party, party and party.
