The attempt to replace people

in #philosophy6 years ago
For the longest of times I believed that the idea that one day people would be replaced by machines was nothing more than a sci-fi novel turned into film. It's been said by plenty of folks that fiction is nothing more than an exploration into possibilities, and because of this, more often than not works of fiction a somewhat prophetic. I guess I'm starting to agree more and more.

Within the walls of this new reality, because as much as we may not want to accept it, it's not debatable that we are already living it. I can't help but to wonder if the social media phenomenon is not a happenstance, but more a response to a social necessity.

It might take some stretching, some mental flexibility to see my point, but I don't think I'm entirely off here. We can't fail to recognize the value we give ourselves using our jobs, our work as a synonym for purpose. So, within this line of reasoning it makes perfect sense that if we have mostly unemployed populations, we would most definitely find ourselves in something that I could only describe as a massive existential crisis.

I must admit that I'm no particular position to identify at what stage we are at currently. In other words, I don't really know how much longer until the clock hits midnight. But, I can't, and I'm sure you can't either, deny that the signs are there, the statistics are also easily found for anyone who is semi proficient with google.

There is almost no need to point out that there are forces of opposition, but they are fringe, and clearly the minority. I've come to accept that all the rhetoric shared by political figures to placate fears has absolutely no substance, or plan of implementation, but it does do one job and one job alone: It wins elections, and it quiets dissent.

As this new world emerges, and a new system of values begins it's birth, I can't help but to wonder if the connection between an online economic system and a social platform, is not only a good idea, but a primary necessity in a world that is unlikely to redirect it's current flight path.

Sort:

Wait until AI drivers are a bit more reliable -- shit will hit the fan.

What happens when all of a sudden 4,400,000 american (mostly) men lose their jobs? I'm assuming most of these people don't have a degree to fall back on (not that that gets anyone anywhere these days) for a different job.

Not to mention the INCREASE in trucking and greenhouse gas emissions these sleepless vehicles will no-doubt cause. It's going to be a hot, dry, angry future.

I wonder when people will wake up and realize that the entire planet is being exploited by a (not too hyperbolic) handful of people.

Technology is great when applied properly. But when it's used carelessly to lop off entire swathes of community that helped build the world with their blood and sweat, it rapidly becomes and extension of greed and short-sightedness. Rather than save countless lives, there's no doubt in my mind that (at at least this example of) AI will be rolled out in a way that will do much more harm than good to society. But a few pockets will be lined.

Think in the lost revenue as a result of AI vehicles not getting speeding tickets. How will they find new ways to tax the non-working class?

Is that true that machines are going to replace some workers? Yes. Are we going to have less jobs because of that? No.
Man work will always be needed, but the thing is... Work that needs less complexity and be manufactured will be replaced because the costs os machine is lower than a man doing. However, when we think about the complex problems, like questions involving ethical and moral, high intelligence or even creativity, won't be replaced so far.

In the perfect world capitalism is needed to move forward but it should end up in socialism/communism where you work as much as you like and take as much as you need. Robots work all the manual labor and people do what they like. If you like robotics you will think how to build better robots and rest of the time you will work on yourself.
But people
so who knows what will happen when a lot of people stay without work because robots. maybe new generations will adopt to changes. It is moving a bit to fast last 100 years. Imagine that someone that is 70 years old had no TV for years, in a lot of parts of the world no electricity either and now he can video chat with his grandchild with a device that he holds in his hand. It is mind blowing for them but it is normal for kids this days.
I started to rumble :D so i will stop

There is really bo stopping AI tech at this point, only tollgates will be put in place in an effort to soften the blow as industries and economies are disrupted. The issue with social platforms is that they too will become overrun by bots if not already. I can say that many of the customer service chats online are most powered by them already so it may be more difficult to distinguish in the future.

AI now has more power, and the ability to recognize objects.I think we will have to be prepared to adapt to the change.

The idea that we get our sense of purpose from a salaried job is however also just a result of our conditioning by “the system”.

People losing their employment and “central source of income” is part of decentralizion. It will be a big shock and readjustment for people and some will not make it on their own (it’s similar to when the wall came down and a whole generation of East Germans never caught up with the new system). Entrepreneurship will rise - the income of an entrepreneur has always been decentralized.

Our purpose is not to have a 9-5 job; it’s to be of service. When our skills and talents match the needs of other people - that’s our purpose.

That’s why I’m so grateful for tokenization in the transitional period. Blockchain will allow us to make money in all sorts of ways - whether it’s social media, or art or mini tasks or whatever - whatever matches our skills and ambitions.

And of course a universal basic income would help, too.

I also believe our purpose here on earth is to grow and expand our consciousness. So this challenge will help us all rise to the occasion. Also, imagine how much we can all expand when we’re not distracted by “having to go to work” anymore :)
