Northern Michigan - Torch Lake

in #travel8 years ago

One pleasure of living in Michigan (because believe me, there are many displeasure's, ha!) in the beauty of the northern parts. I'd like to introduce you to Torch Lake (for those that have not heard of it). We rented a house for a week a few summers ago, which is where these photos were taken.

Torch Lake is located in Atrium/Kalkaska counties, and spans a whopping 19 miles of inland lake shoreline...the longest inland lake in the whole state. As you can see from the first photo, it looks like a Caribbean paradise...with crystal clear waters and various light and dark blues that radiate when the sun hits the lake.

Since it is a true inland lake, this is perfect for water skiing, and is usually calm as can be. There are no large ships or much boat traffic at all on the lake. The only busy part is at the southern tip where a famous sand bar is located.

Image above is from MLive, as I had to share an air shot to show the big picture.

Fishing is not that great on the lake, as it is deep and does not contain a lot of fish. We did however, catch a really nice coho salmon on the lake one year. It was quite the surprise.

Night time is very peaceful around the lake, with various fires that can be seen around the shoreline, include the one we made below.

This lake is a must see if you visit northern Michigan...especially if you have a small boat. Even if you don't, there are some scenic views just driving around the lake.
