Following on from yesterday's post in relation to what's causing Brimbank to continue in a backwards trend we continue to delve into Brimbanks local economy.

Previous census data showed Brimbank had a population of almost 200,000 residents with employment close to 90,000.

Fast forward to the most recent census data and we can see Brimbank has continued to grow exceeding 200,000 residents.

However employment is down by 10,000 workers, that's a large chunk of Brimbanks workforce gone.

The industries impacted were mainly manufacturing and mining.

Trades, services and health grew as did power, gas and waste services, the latter as a result of the building boom that is currently taking place in the community.

As the precariet continues to have its place whiped from the community it is important to act now, build partnerships with training institutions and employers to find out the need of business over the coming years.

The state government has shown great leadership in addressing this issue by implementing free tafe courses to assist in developing those skills.

We need a local government response to facilitate and drive this on a local level.

Brimbank would greatly benefit by Brimbank City Council establishing strong networks and linking locals into fields that suite their skills and facilitating community strategies.

What are some of your thoughts about what could be done locally?
