Weekend off and offline

in #food8 years ago

Warning: This weekend consisted of cliches, so skip the following story if you are not interested in reading about slow mornings and such!

Rise and shine

When the morning light bursts through the bedroom window the alarm clock usually starts ringing with it's horrifying tone. But not yesterday, or the day before.

We had the most relaxing weekend off and slept as long as we wanted without any clocks ringing.

Only alarm there was, was the heat of the sunlight, which woke me up earlier than I would otherwise had waken up. If we have a day off, I usually wake up before my better half and make us some coffee and breakfast, so that she doesn't have to get up for that. That's because it kind of is what she does at work every single day. I like pampering her, because it's so rare that she gets to sleep longer than until 5 o'clock. On sunday we enjoyed the breakfast in bed peacefully with no hurry anywhere.

My own sleepy head buried in quilts and pillows. Wakey wakey! ;)

Brekkie bliss

Our most important breakfast essential is dark roasted coffee, which we usually drink from iconic Finnish Moomin mugs. They come in many different prints and colors with the cutest Moomin characters by Tove Jansson exploring in them (I could show you someday our vast collection, we have probably about 30 mugs or so) and today was a pink day and they were accidentally matched with the bedding.

Moomintroll and The Snork maiden hugging in the side of  "Rakkaus"-mug ("love"-mug).

Both of us also loves fruits and berries and everything fresh, so on sunday I made us bowls of yoghourt with blood oranges, banana, raspberries and muesli and freshly squeezed orange juice to beat the black baggies under our eyes caused by staying up too late the evening before.

BTW these bowls are made of coconut shells. Aren't they adorable? We brought them from Thailand as a souvenir. Those "Sukat makkaralla"-classes are my absolute favorites, designed by Finnish Marimekko (the name refers to socks that are rumpled)

After our long brekkie we decided to walk to my mother in law, since the weather was so wonderfully springy. They cooked us smoked salmon and veggies for lunch and we got to admire beautiful views to the lake, that open from their gorgeous living room. While chatting there, we spotted that the swans had arrived which is a definite sign of spring! Tried to capture them strutting on the ice, but they were so far away that all the pictures end up being quite mushy.

Saturday night fever

We were lucky to get tickets to a sold out Finnish artist Vestas gig on saturday. Her new album "Lohtulauseita" was released about a week ago and she just started her first tour with all the gigs sold out immediately, so we were privileged to be able to go listen to her on live. Her songs are mostly about love and relationships in different angles, but the way she tells the story is very original and not too sweet and soft and icky, like most of them love songs. Fear and insecurity are also audible in her authentic lyrics. Melodies vary from modern ballades to playful experiments and rock influenced murkiness. No wonder this album was one of the most waited Finnish albums this year! The gig was amazing and tickets worth fighting for. We have no pics from there, for that we were too exited about the event and dancing and swinging along the songs. It was quite dark in there as well so we probably couldn't have got proper ones anyway.

Wine and dine

Saturday night concert wasn't our only date night this weekend, as on friday went to a luxury three course dinner to a local high class restaurant. Jonna had bought us a gift card to that place earlier and finally we had the time to use it. We love this restaurant obviously for it's well prepared and delicious food but also for the elegant atmosphere. We are generally quite laid-back and casual people but it's refreshing to act fine every now and then.

As amuse boushe we got little cupful of butternut squash soup with puffed rye grits.

The starter was terrine made of rooster and pistachios, served with apricot jam and dragoon purée.

Our main course was pike-perch, potatoes and shrimps with cauliflowers and smoked white wine sauce.

And last but not least, as a dessert we had a bun cake (kinda like french toast) with red currants and meadowsweet ice cake (Finnish name is jäädyke, but I'm not sure how to translate it properly so ended up calling it ice cake).

Altough I just described our weekend irrationally in reverse order from Sunday to Friday and am feeling those dinner vibes now, it's already Monday so it's time to get back to reality and head to the gym for some serious butt workout to burn those calories!

P.S. This was definitely not our ordinary weekend! Usually we are both working and don't have much time for each other, or this kind of luxury. This is why we went offline and didn't chat or post anything for couple of days.
