๐ฝ๐ฅ๐ถ My 1st Year Gardening
Itโs getting colder now and Iโm wrapping up the outside space at my home. This year my aunt and I finished a garden area where I live. Partially decorative, however, the main feature is a raised bed we created to grow vegetables. Autumn is setting in now, the garden has produced its final yield.
I learned a lot about gardening in this first year by helping my uncle with his backyard plots. They are considerably larger collectively than mine. That allows him to grow a more diverse set of plants. He also has years more experience than I do. This first year, Iโve been taking every tip on gardening I can get. As a note, that little cage is where I kept my seed starts as they matured and hardened off enough to plant into soil.
For next season, I'm looking at installing a few more beds next to a wall to expand my active growing space. Looking to move peppers and climbing beans over there. Maybe corn too. Still thinking about the logistics of how to manage the water supply issues because my deck will between the two areas. Also, my spigot is located in a corner, so I may need to get a splitter and just leave a spare hose running under it to water the other beds next year.
Iโm really happy having done my first year. Itโs something Iโve wanted to do for a very long time. My grandmother would garden in the summer when I visited. It reminds me of her.
I made a lot of tomato sauce from scratch and gave some of it away. 3 different batches in fact. The first was a very rustic finish that was spicy as hell. Definitely the hottest batch by a mile. The second run was pureed into a finer sauce that poured smooth, no chunks.
The idea was to make it more flavorful and less hot to the tongue. My favorite version of the sauces. People asked that I make a high flavor low heat sauce that was well pureed. So, the third and final batch was in that stye. It took the longest to make but the taste was good.
Also, there are still pickles that are in jars, both dill as well as bread and butter. My aunt pickled and canned all of this for us to have. Growing vegetables has been a worthwhile endeavor. Yes, I had some failures. A lot of plants died or produced very little because I travelled quite a lot through the summer and the received irregular care through some stretches. Expanding for next year also means attempting to make it easy to care for the plants in the event that I leave for adventures again. Though some cucumbers I grew did make it onto Isle Royale with Andrew and me.
It would be great to hear from other gardeners about what they do to breakdown for winter or how they might prepare during the winter for the next growing season.
Great job with your veggies, the tomato sauce looks especially yum! I am starting out my veggie garden at the moment, might not be quite the right time of year but I am giving it my best go. I'll follow you so I can learn a thing or two, thank you for sharing :)
I probably won't be publishing very much gardening content for a few months. Our season just ended over the last few weeks. I wish I had documented more of the beginning process which was really active. Maybe next time around.
Not to worry - this gives you the opportunity to plan some posts ready in time for next season!
Wow nice job. Seems like you have a small UFO in ur garden ;)
I love pickles, maybe it is a good topic for you to share how your aunt made them. They look very nice and yummy :)
Yeah it kinda does doesn't it? It's a small fire pit that has never been used to hold flames though. Just my seed starts at this point.
Congratulations on your first year, looks as though it was successful. There are many places you can buy heirloom seeds.
Hey thanks, it went pretty decently. Have some changes I plan to make and additional plots I want to install. I still have some heirloom seeds that I will be working with next year. I don't mind just trying things and seeing how it comes along.
That's a nice little garden setup you have there! It's a good way to start gardening. Adding a couple of raised beds next year will increase the amount of things that you can grow. You could also try growing a few plants in large containers. The only thing with containers is that they need more attention to watering than growing in the ground.
For heirloom seed varieties, you could check out the place that I get some of my seeds from every year, www.anniesheirloomseeds.com
Yeah, containers have been harder to manage for me. I do intend to put in at least one more raised bed for next year in a location that gets slightly different sun exposure. Just curious how that will effect some things. Definitely can use the overall space but also looking to diversify.
I'll check out that company, thanks for giving me the heads up
Good work - its always satisfying to see the fruits of your labour!
I like gardening (so much that some summers I give up my day job and work as a gardener!), but rarely focus on growing stuff. Im more a destructive force than a creative one!
Ha! I've been on that side too. - used to do landscaping and hardscaping construction.
Definitely looking forward to next year and learning more about crop varieties.
Lovely! Way to go!
You garden too?
Yes! My garden bible is Mel's Square Foot Garden Book. I have lots of pictures but they are all over on facebook- so I will slowly transfer them over here too. Your garden is awesome and so is your sauce! You're a natural.

Definitely a good idea to transition your content over here. Steemit has really begun to influence my content creation and publishing process.
Careful with those short replies, there are developments on the platform to curb or punish folks for lackluster comments. Just a heads cause you're actually legitimately engaging on here.
Thank you for the info about the short replies... gah. Most of my replies are short and to the point. In fact, most of the time I just type "Thank you" to let them know I read it and appreciate their effort. I suppose I will have to add flowery non necessary words to not get in trouble. sigh....Thank you.
I would advocate that you find ways to make constructive comments and not add flowery/non-vital words to a reply. Comment sections are for conversations.
Functionally, up voting says "thank you" but you'll figure it out. We've made it this far...
Indeed. Duly noted. Thank you. :)
Hello! Nice to see you post about gardening! Looks like you got some great produce this year. We live in Panama and just started gardening recently as well. We just plant whatever seeds are in the food we eat. I'm amazed at how relatively easy it is here. Your tomato sauce sounds really good and the pickles look really nice! Good job.
Hey thanks! Seeds here are GMO typically so they can't be reproduced unless they're "heirloom". I do want to experiment more with heirloom next year. The ones I worked with this year were difficult but I'll keep trying because the variety is great.
Thanks for checking out my article, I with I had more photos to put in it.
The pics are nice! Looks like a really nice place! We just plant every seed and don't know what will grow and what won't. I guess Panama probably has different rules about seeds. I need to get some watermelon seeds going. Or maybe that's what I planted yesterday - the tiny plants from the watermelon seeds - now that I think about it. :) Looking forward to more from you!
So then your growing season is just getting underway right now? I wish I had been writing about my garden from the beginning...
Well, in Panama it is pretty much year round from what I can tell. We have a rainy season and a dry season. We moved here 7 months ago and we really don't know what we are doing, but we are just trying things out at this point. :)
That's really amazing though. Good luck making it work down there. I'm sure its a challenge but you can figure out what will work for you.
Thanks for the encouragement! :)
