Ever wanted to create a nation? Bitnation lets you do that from the ground up and allows real people to join your nation, participate in its governance and benefit from its existence.

BITNATION QUICK OVERVIEW

Bitnation is a platform for creating a network of voluntary decentralized nations that anyone can build, join, and leave. These nations each have their own way of governance. Bitnation provides the framework for building the governance.

These decentralized nations provide the necessary framework for the borderless world of the future. This doesn't mean that Bitnation is going to take over when the world collapses but rather provide a legal structure for borderless smart contracts and interactions created by cryptocurrency, refugee migrations, and other current happenings.

The benefit of these nations is that rules can be applied to contracts or p2p transactions that cross physical borders and normally become subject to multiple sets of regulations that not only make business confusing but expensive, time-consuming and complicated.

My previous article discussed many of the reasons why creating decentralized borderless voluntary nations (DBVNs) are important and a more thorough review of Bitnation. This piece is going to focus on what these nations actually consist of.

CREATING A NATION

At the base of each DBVN is a set of smart contracts that are used to govern the community. These smart contracts allow all transactions to be recorded onto the blockchain. These transactions can include simple monetary exchanges, notary stamps, land titles and even marriage certificates.

These smart contracts will also record all of the rules of the DBVN, in a sort of immutable constitution. As such, each DBVN is required to have a constitution of its own that contains basic information including how to enter and how or leave the nation as well as its benefits, responsibilities, and core principals.

Now we get into the fun part. For me I've always dreamed of creating a nation and have spent countless hours playing CIV, choosing my government, my civics, and my policies. Bitnation is the real world implementation of that. The creator and contributors to a DBVN will craft it the way they like and the way they believe will benefit others.

They will choose a legal code from commonly used types like Common Law, Civil Law, or Sharia. They can create their own from scratch, and even get help from third-party contributors that may include lawyers or political scientists. The Bitnation team is also working to include law sets that are based on specific countries.

Each DBVN will select and fine-tune their economic model. Capitalism, socialism, communism and every imaginable model will be available or can be crafted.

What decision model will each nation choose? Some will like a democratic model with elected leaders and majority votes while others may choose holacracy, or even theocracy.

The creator will need to indicate whether the DBVN is a completely independent jurisdiction or if it falls within the overlying Pangea jurisdiction. Nations can also choose to band together or even overlap portions to benefit each other.

Lastly, the nation must decide what governmental services it will provide. There are many options including security, healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The services may dictate many of the other choices.

POPULATION BASED ON REPUTATION

Over time there may be a giant number of new nations created. Bitnation has implemented a token system that aims to help curate the most effective nations.

Bitnation uses a general token known as PAT. This token is fully exchangeable and is used to create nations and smart contracts on Pangea. The project also has three non-exchangeable reputation based tokens.

The proof-of-agreement token is something that individuals earn for creating and executing smart contracts. These tokens are not necessarily tied to the effectiveness of a nation. However, the Proof-of-Collective (POC) and Proof-of-Nonic (PON) tokens are very much nation-centric.

The POC tokens are the reputation tokens of a nation. This measures how well a community interacts with itself, its smart contracts, and laws and are rewarded accordingly.

PON tokens are based on human ratings and are essentially a form of Smart Contract reputation token. One of their main goals is to provide information on a DBVNs laws and rules and to let others know how they rate in: ● User Friendliness and Comprehensiveness;

● Efficiency, Security, Trustworthiness, and Predictability;

● Openness (source code access and documentation).

All three of these tokens will give users a way to compare similar nations, to create "viral" nations, and to help more active and effective nations find new members.

SUMMARY

The thoroughness of creating a DBVN on the Bitnation platform is impressive. It is a huge undertaking but a necessary one. The idea is very similar to Aragon's DAO governance project but encompasses much more as a nation is much more complicated and has more complex social needs than a typical organization.

Overall, Bitnation is providing a solution to a problem that will continue to grow more apparent as time goes on and the world and interactions become more global and borderless.
