Contrail or Chemtrail?
Or is it both?
I see a lot of posts discussing chemtrails on Steemit. If you don’t know what a chemtrail is then Wikipedia is your friend.
I’ve never been a believer in this conspiracy theory however, since starting work in a regional area, I’ve certainly started to see a lot more of them (more likely contrails for those of us who don’t believe in this conspiracy). And I took this picture today while out in the field.
Their frequent formation out here is probably to do with the fact that aeroplanes are at a much higher altitude in regional areas in comparison to urban centres, and so condensation is going to form more readily, however I’m certainly no expert in this field.
But seeing so many of them always makes me think about the conspiracy. And I can fully understand why people might be worried when they see these above them on a daily basis.
If you’ve never read about chemtrails before then it’s well worth reading about. While I certainly don’t believe in this conspiracy, it’s fascinating reading none-the-less.

I may have said this before to you, @mazzle, so if I did, I apologize. I find it sad, though, that in the day and age where information is so abundant, that we can't seem to say much of anything with certainty anymore.
As with any type of conspiracy, I tend to look at things like:
How many people need to keep this secret?
Is there really a benefit for the offending party to do what they're accused of doing?
What's the cost to do it?
What's more plausible—it's happening, or it's not happening?
There's not really an order to that, and there's probably some other angles to look at things from, but that's the start.
The issue, unfortunately is, as you and @mattclarke have been discussing, we can't really put anything past any government, because they've outright done so many things that don't need to be proven through an excessive amount of circumstantial evidence and circular logic.
I think if we managed to focus in on those things (good luck), things could improve dramatically for all of us.
I like your approach, and your list of things to confirm before believing in anything. Trust is a huge issue with any government these days. The Australian government is now openly taking payment to disregard laws and things that need to be urgently changed. Our entire government are climate deniers for example, and our environmental minister is blatantly ignoring her portfolio while taking payment from big industry to turning a blind eye on vital issues. It's insanity.
There is a way to distinguish between a contrail and a chemtrail. Around the time of the wide implementation of jet engines circa WW2 the US air force did some extensive research into the conditions that need to exist for jet engines to create a contrail (mostly because a contrail is something to approximate a target when you can't see the plane). It's a product of temp and humidity that culminates in a dew point. They collated the research into a chart known as the Appleman chart.
So if you compare the sounding data at various altitudes(freely available from the BOM) to the Appleman chart you can see if the conditions exist for a contrail to form. Most of the time they are just contrails but at least 20% of the time the formation of contrails is impossible even though the sky is full of trails.
I know a few technicians from a nearby air force base and they clam up tighter than a ducks arse whenever I question them about anything on the subject but one retired radar engineer I know (who remained neutral on the topic) pointed me towards the Appleman charts and the BOM sounding data so I could draw my own conclusions.
Chemtrails are no longer the domain of conspiracy researchers. It's public record. Have a look (Google is your big brother friend)

Not trusting the government is always a good jumping off point; and despite the scorn heaped on the chemtrail believers I don't think they fail to understand the nature of contrails; they just believe they're a good way to disguise the large scale crop-dusting of human livestock on free range tax farms.
I don't doubt the government would be willing to do something like that; but if the practice were widespread, there'd be too much evidence, and too many whistleblowers, so it's a no from me, at least for now.
Too many commas in that last sentence, I sound like William Shatner.
I totally understand why people would come to the conclusion that atmospheric manipulation is happening. But there’s some interesting conclusion jumping with some of the theories out there. Definitely a no from me.

Hi @mazzle :). I love con theorys because they open dialog and that is a fact. As for chemtrails I can get behind two of the ideas.
First one is THEY ARE POISONING US AAAAAAA!!!! and that one is a bit ridiculous isn't it, although??? "pharmaceuticals economics"
And the second one is THAEY ARE TRYING TO CONTROL CLIMATE CHANGE!! this one has more merit but still... How do you stop the inevitable?
We as little people don't have a say so no need to start a panic, what will be will be, am I right? Just hope we all survive :D.
