The best way to generate hundreds of ideas of original content

Brainstorming new and original content can be a difficult task.

Content marketing is the most effective form of marketing, but it requires a great effort to stay constant and competitive. Producing valuable content week after week is not easy.

Along with tracking Quora and finding ways to reuse previous content, competitive research plays an important role in the content planning process.

However, many marketing specialists do not know how to conduct effective research on the activity of the competition. Sure, you can check a competitor's blog and propose some ideas, but are they the best? They are original? Will they make you stand out?

What most sellers do

Research is something that anyone with a pair of eyes thinks they can do. Looking at a lot of websites and taking notes? Duh

However, most people will not carry out a highly effective and thoughtful investigation.

They will search the website, blog and social networks of a competitor, looking for content that has generated a great participation for that company, seeking to replicate its success. They will take notes of what content stands out and end with a list of titles of publications, ready to be written.

A web design agency, for example, could be conducting research at another web design agency. The seller will find an article: "The best WordPress themes for bloggers". They will realize that many people have commented and shared a few times. A blog post idea titled "6 WordPress themes kick-ass for bloggers" is added to your list of blog posts to be written.

This is good. The blog post will probably work well. I'm not suggesting that everyone produce completely unique content every time.

However, there is a much better way to conduct competitive research. One way to generate more traffic and avoid discarding with other companies the same number of Google searches.

What you should be doing

It's time to look a little deeper. Instead of just looking at the title and content of the article to get ideas, take inspiration from the missing content.

In the previous example, the web design agency should look for what is not in the publication of the blog of its competitor, not try to replicate what is already there. Maybe your competitor did not mention a particular feature that would be useful for bloggers. The agency should jump on this and write a post about that feature, why it's useful and give examples of great WordPress themes that do include that feature.

This is how you stay competitive: select the content that your competitors do not mention, and you take advantage of it.

Is there something you are not telling people what you think they should be? Tell the people yourself.

When you start looking for gaps in your competitor's content, instead of just looking at what is already there, you will find a mine of original content that hopes to be converted into something of value.

Transforming gaps into original content Once

you have identified some great content ideas, you have two options:

  • Write your own version of your post, but include the additional content that you think was lost.

  • Convert additional content into many shorter and more detailed publications.

I prefer the second option, since it is aimed at people looking for answers to more specific questions and means that you do not fight so much with your competitors for the traffic.

However, it is a good idea to use the first option from time to time when:

a) It is a really important issue

I

b) You know you can write it better than you can

What I am saying is ...

The investigation requires more reflection than you are probably putting into yours at this time.

If you really want to compete, you need to be where your competitors are not. You already knew it, but it all starts with your research and takes time to master your process.

So, to summarize:

  • Choose your competitors who are producing great content

  • Find what your content is missing

  • Produce that content yourself.
