Do you want to grow your follower base? Then learn from the master. This year is the 80th anniversary of Dale Carnegie's blockbuster self help guide, but is it still relevant? You're darn tootin'. It even applies to Steemit and building your follower fan base.
Carnegie divides the book into the sections below, so let's dive in...

Don't criticize, condemn, or complain.
Few people like to be told what to do. Even when it is valid criticism, think carefully about how you phrase it. Think about the people in the office, no one wants to be friends with the person who is always moaning and complaining. Do you know what, it's the same on Steemit.

Give honest and sincere appreciation.
Everyone likes to see a stream of comments after their post. Appreciation is as powerful a way of winning friends on Steemit as in the real world. I loved my first comment, my first tip and my first reSteem and promptly friended those people. Others will too. Be careful not to over-egg it, people, like in the real world, can see through flattery, it must be genuine.

Arouse in the other person an eager want.
Know what your followers want and give it to them. Look at which posts do well and think about how you can hit that sweet spot again and again and again...

Become genuinely interested in other people.

You can make more friends in two months by being interested in
them, than in two years by making them interested in you.

Be genuinely interested in people and their comments. Try to take time to respond to people's comments, they've put effort into commenting, if they don't see reciprocation, they'll think you don't care.

Smile..
A bit of humour and an emoji go a long way .

Remember that a person's name is, to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language.
Use the person's username in comments now and again. Great idea @maxbullion.

Be a good listener.
Ask questions, people feel guilty about not answering. After you've had a few back and forwards, they'll feel they have a rapport with you and are much more likely to hit the follow button.

Talk in terms of the other person's interest.

"The royal road to a person's heart is to talk about the things
he or she treasures most."

If you talk to the person about what they've written about, they will feel valued and value you in return.

@maxbullion I checked your profile after your quick response and this one caught my eye. It was a great idea to remind to all of us that these things work also in an online world. And ultimately, more people following this approach mean better experience on steemit for everyone.

Good advice. Its funny how simple the suggestions are, but they sure are effective.

Thanks Eroche

Very well put! :) I came checking up on you to see if you've delivered on that fear of flying story you promised, but this was a really nice read too. ;)

It's coming, it's coming. Hope I didn't build it up too much and you're disappointed.

Nah, it's ok, I can wait, I'm patient. I'm just teasing ya. :D
I'm curious to know what happened.
I may just some day share the story of how I helped a passenger that was afraid of flying.
