CAMPUSCONNECT NIGERIA WEEKLY CONTEST- WEEK 3-MAKING CHANGES/@MAX2118 ENTRY/

in CampusConnect3 years ago (edited)

Good morning everyone, this week’s contest is on changes that could be made to our various institutions and universities. I’m a student of university of Nigeria Enugu campus, one of the best universities in Nigeria(as they say) although as a student of UNN and a front row observer I would say that it is not true and if it is true, then the standard of education in Nigeria has dropped so bad. On this contest I could write forever on changes that can and should be made but I'd just like to write about a few
ADEQUATE INFRASTRUCTURES
Adequate infrastructure is a problem of virtually every sector in Nigeria. It’s so sad that in our universities most of the buildings are buildings that were erected in the 1980s when our parents were still students and no attempt has been made to renovate them to current standards. Every few years new departments are created without adequate classrooms, reading rooms or practical labs being built to accommodate new students. And because of this we find that students don’t have enough classrooms for learning or places where they can go to study. Personally, this problem affects me greatly because as a medical student I face the problem of congested lecture halls or looking for suitable places to read.
The government needs to invest in our universities by building more classrooms, study halls and expanding the library so that it can accommodate more students. Renovation of hostels ( especially boys’ hostels) and erection of more hostels to accommodate the ever increasing population. More and better apparatus should be provided for practical and learning. All these changes if made will provide a better and more comfortable learning environment for students. Students won’t have to skip lectures because of congested classrooms or look for places to study within the school environment.

COMPETENT LECTURERS AND BETTER DEPARTMENTAL PROCEDURES
This to me is one of the worst and most annoying problems of our Nigerian universities. Lecturers are so incompetent and unserious with their work, departmental procedures are so hard and unnecessary. For instance, registration of courses are supposed to be made easy especially in this digital age but we’re still made to register manually with a bunch of documents that they don’t even use for anything after we must have registered online. They take us through many unnecessary steps when everything can be done faster and easier online. All these unnecessary procedures wear the students out and waste precious time that should be used for something else. Lecturers hardly come to class and when they do, they hardly ever teach anything. I think there should be a major reform, departmental procedures should be made as easy as possible for students, lecturers need to be properly supervised and penalized if anyone breaks a rule.

                                      ACCOUNTABLE STUDENTS UNION

We youths all complain about corrupt leaders and governments and we scream change but we fail to realize that change needs to start from our student union governments. Our student union has become a place where students go to make money and create connections to go higher in politics rather than serve students. It has become a political thing. The student union government is no more for the student populace. The first step to curbing any form of corruption is to create accountability, our student leaders need to be more accountable to us. Every move, money and decision should be explained to the student populace. They need to know our needs and be able to represent us well.

WELL EQUIPPED AND BETTER SPORTS COMPLEX

Sports is an integral part of our society. It can also be a source of income as not everyone is education inclined. One of the things that set us apart from European and American countries is how serious they take sports. They create avenues where talent can be found and helped to the next level. In our universities we don’t even have good sports complexes or equipment to train and bring up talents. That needs to change. We need to diversify and take sports a lot more serious, new sport complexes for different games need to be built and equipped in order to give an alternative to people who are good at sports. Sports can also be source of revenue to the university if they invest in it and sponsor competitions where scouts can come to fish new talents.

There are still a lot of changes that can be made. I hope you enjoy my post and you learnt a thing or two from my post. Thank you.
