My colored pencil portrait of a blue merle dog

Here is a freehand drawing I did of a blue merle dog: 16 x 20, colored pencil on paper. I traveled to my client's house so that I could get a good photo of her dog. The previous ones she had taken were a little blurry, and I don't blame her--the dog was young and full of energy.

After I drove out to her place, I could see getting a good photo would be a challenge.

It was a rainy day, cloudy, with not enough light to capture a moving target! We ended up going under the giant eaves of her garage, large enough to completely shelter us from the rain. But still, there was the problem of getting the excitable dogs to hold still.

My client knew what to do.

She stood behind me, holding a doggie treat just over my head. The dog fixed his attention on the treat, and I snapped a series of photos! With those excellent photos, I was able to capture enough detail to do this drawing confidently.
