Singing sands from ancient times caused a lot of folk superstitions. In the legends that have survived to this day, the singing of sand was explained by the activity of desert spirits, fantastic animals, the sounding of bells of buried cities, powerful rivers raging under the earth and many other unusual causes.

One of the legends says: "In ancient times the devil (that is, devil) traveled the world. He looked after people, built intrigues, managed everywhere and did not miss anything. Once, God the Almighty was angry with him and deprived him of the opportunity to move lightly from one place to another. Then Shaytan had to walk to get to his house - and the house stood on top of the mountain. For a long time the Shaytaan walked along the steppe, made his way along winding paths along the banks of the Ili River, finally got tired and lay down to rest. So difficult was his way and so heavy was the burden of the deeds committed by him, that the Shaytaan fell asleep in a sound sleep. And he sleeps till now, having addressed a lonely barkhan, and nothing and nobody can wake him up - neither the scorching sun, nor rains, nor thunderstorms, nor winds. Only sometimes a lonely moan breaks out of his chest, when someone tries to disturb the asleep Shaitan forever. "

According to another legend, under the sands of the barkhana, Genghis Khan and his combat comrades are buried, and the sand sings when the soul of the khan, "exhausted by spiritual torment, tells his descendants about his exploits."
