Steemit, let's dance a little! An afro-jazz rhythm inspired in Joe Henderson's "Rain Check" video

in #dtube8 years ago (edited)

Hey Steemit!

Here's my version of an afro rhythm I heard many years ago, played by the incredible Greg Hutchinson on drums, on the song "Rain Check" from the album Lush Life, of great saxo player Joe Henderson.

The song itself goes back and fourth between a sort of afro groove and swing both in the head (melody) and the solo form.

Everytime I listen to it, it makes me dance. I hope this does the same to you.

For drummers, the hihat on 2 and 4 is the main link between the afro and swing, so you want to make sure to play it in both situations so there isn't such an impact when changing between them.
Also, the fill you would do to change between afro and swing should, at least when starting to practicing this, be always related to the rhythm we are going after, not the one we are leaving.
That will make the transition easier to to be played, and feel nice too.

I hope you enjoy it, please up-vote, and follow me @matiasmenarguez

See you later!
