The most powerful and largest diesel engine in the world
Dimensions and characteristics of the most powerful and large diesel affect — without oil and other technical liquids (in dry form), this machine weighs 2300 tons; the height of the diesel engine reaches — 13,2 meters, and the length — 26,7 meters.
Other features Wartsila-Sulzer 14RTA96-C:
• The working volume of 480 liters 25;
• The cylinder bore is 960 mm;
- Piston stroke-2500 mm;
- Average effective pressure-1.96 MPa (19.2 kgf / cm2);
- Maximum power — 108,920 HP at 102 rpm;
- Torque-7 571 221 N•m;
- Fuel consumption-13 724 liters per hour.
The liter capacity of the most powerful diesel is incredibly low — about 4.3 horsepower per liter. Be surprised, because in modern turbocharged car diesel engines engineers have learned to" get "one liter more than a hundred"horses". Large marine diesel engines Wartsila-Sulzer work slowly, the shaft speed at maximum power is only some 102 turns per minute (passenger diesel engines 3-5 thousand revolutions). Such low power at huge sizes is not chosen by chance. This gives a good gas exchange in the diesel (imagine the amount of air that needs to be pumped), a small speed of the piston in the engine, in the end — a good efficiency.
The Wartsila-Sulzer 14RTA96 - C engine consumes 6280 liters of fuel per hour. It may seem that is a lot, but keep in mind that all marine diesel engines, unlike automotive, work on heavy marine diesel fuel has a lower energy content and specific consumption in all modes, this diesel engine is around 118-126 grams per horsepower per hour (that's 1.5−2.5 times lower than that of automotive diesel engines).
Currently, the team of Wartsila designers is working on the development and creation of an 18-cylinder version of its powerful diesel engine.
