Wakefield (Film): Review.

in #film5 years ago

In 1835, Nathaniel Hawthorne, a writer, published a short story entitled Wakefield, which later, exactly 181 years later, in 2016, the director Robin Swicord would take as basis and inspiration to make a film with the same name, starring Bryan Cranston, and of which I will speak today.

Plot

Howard Wakefield, a lawyer from New York, decides to leave his life and take refuge in the attic located on the garage of his house, watching in secret as his wife and daughters continue their lives in his absence.

Opinion

Howard Wakefield, a successful lawyer from New York, moves through the metro station on his way home, but during the trip the subway stops because of a blackout, so he has to finish the journey walking, while this happens Howard does not answer phone calls made by his wife, Diana. Just before entering his house, Howard finds a raccoon in the garden which slips into the garage's attic in front of the house, Howard decides to go up to scare the animal, being there the electric power returns, giving a panoramic view of everything that happens in his house and allowing him to watch as his wife calls him on the phone, but with the intention of seeing his wife's reaction he does not answer the call again, so Diana decides to take her husband's food and throw it in the trash can. Howard, knowing that coming home would start a contentious discussion with his wife, prefers to sit a moment and wait for everyone to fall asleep, however, it is he who falls asleep.

The next morning Howard wakes up in the attic, but instead of going into the house, he prefers to wait until his two daughters, Giselle and Taylor, have left for school and his wife goes to work, however, things do not happen as he expected, Diana after calling the Howard's office and friends, also decides to communicate with the police and later with his mother, before finally leaving for work. Once there is no one in the house, he decides to take a shower, shave his beard, and eat, however, the arrogance, the jealousy, the emotional conflict he has with his wife, but especially his selfishness, make him decide not to go to work and evade the whole problem, hiding in the attic and staying there, to see how, according to him, his wife would need it and thus be able to feed his ego.

In this film we can find many good things, the first of which is originality, I have my hopes placed on low budget films, with just under $800,000 they managed to film it, getting Bryan Cranston and Jennifer Garner to participate in the project, which resulted in a very good drama. Another truly great thing was the fact that the director decides to put the main character, Howard Wakefield, in a position similar to the one Alfred Hitchcock put on Jeff, the character in his famous movie Rear Window, and who is played by James Stewart, making both observe from their window what happens on the other side, but unable to interfere with the events that happen, Jeff physically, and Howard psychologically.

The photographic work is very well done, although the film does not stand out for its staging, but for the story it is telling. The acting work falls on the shoulders of Bryan Cranston, who carries all the weight of the film giving us a very convincing and very well developed performance.

The film can become slow, however, I was not bored to see it, the viewer must know in advance that what he is going to witness is a film of the drama genre, which assumes that the story that will be told through the cameras will be a slow story and that seeks to delve into the feelings and the evolution of the characters.

If I have something negative about the film, its not about the end, because I liked it, what I did not really like is that at the end of the movie, I did not know if the character had a real evolution or not, it just was not clear to me, I feel that the character grew and evolved with respect to the life experience he had, but I am not sure that he is a renewed person, apparently, his motivations remain the same always.

Score

7/10

A very well done drama, starts very well, and although the rhythm may decay a bit, it recovers part of its initial energy at the end. I recommend it, sure that everyone can get their own reflection about what is shown in the film.
