How Do We Measure our Success on Steemit???

We are obsessed with putting numbers on success like it actually means something, even here on steemit, numbers play a big role in our perception of how successful we are.

I have been on steemit for 170 days, in this time I would say I have achieved some success but am I successful? Let's take a look at some numbers.

170 Days.

90 posts

1550 Followers

6000+ Upvotes

2000+ Comments

2800 in payouts

Weekly Author

Dailey Top Payout.

Can I really judge my success on these numbers and do they really mean anything?

The problem with success by numbers is that someone out there will always have more numbers than you, this can have the effect of making you feel unsuccessful or inadequate.

For this reason I try not to concentrated so much on the figures and instead focused on building successful relationships with my readers, the fact that I have received 1000 replies but made 2000 comments is a success to me, this tells me that I have put in some real effort to engage with my audience and I believe this has, in turn, made me 'successful'.

On the other hand, if I had focused on how much other people were getting for their posts I believe this would've had a negative effect on my positivity towards steemit and I would have given up a long time ago.

Of course, I judge my post's success with numbers but not in the way you might think if my post has had 100 views and only 30 upvotes then I see this as a sign that I need to work harder next time.

Which post is more successful?

I have hidden the payouts on these 2 posts, if you were to base the success of these posts on votes vs views and comments then which would you say was the most successful?

Post 1.

Post 2

Although post 1 has much better statistics, it actually had a lower payout. My point with this exercise is that we tend to judge a post by its payout which is not always a true reflection of how successful it was, and if we really must base success on numbers then we should focus on the numbers that really matter, the ones that reflect the engagement and feedback a post gets.

What is the point of this post?

When I sat down to write this post I had planned to do a milestone post but after writing the first sentence I realized that I don't actually care about those numbers and I don't expect you to either, this made me reflect on what makes us truly successful?

We all have different standards but I see myself as being successful on steemit because after 170 days I'm still here writing posts and engaging with my readers, yes, my posts are getting much bigger payouts now but this could all change tomorrow.

Forget about the payouts and focus on the connection, the community, the way in which we all support each other in one way or another, don't be disheartened by other peoples success on steemit, embrace it instead and be happy in the knowledge that their success will one day trickle down to reach everyone on this platform, that is the nature of this wonderful place we all call Steemit.

Peace and love to the World.

Succes has nothing to do with numbers, but an individuals willingness to listen to its deeper self and act upon its acknowledgement(JMO).

If you look up in a dictionary, what the definition of sucess is: "the accomplishment of an aim or purpose", "the attainment of popularity or profit" or " a person or thing that achieves desired aims or attains prosperity.

But I think we need to look at this in a more philosophical level. If we rewrite "the accomplishment of an aim or purpose" to "success is the right response to a challence" or in the case of steemit itself its invirontment. In other words Steemit is the right response to the invironment of the world we live in now and thereby a success. This can also be drawn into a personal level. You Mark and family probably had other ideas on how to socialize on the internet, than using facebook, twitter etc, but your intuitive reaction "pussed" you to steemit, which seen from this perspective, was the right response. The thing that you also share "real life challences" and are TRUE freedom figthers just shows your sucess within itself. I think you came here with a "desired aim" to do a difference, which you obviously have achieved. I will finish with this, your 170 days on steemit has definetily been a SUCCESS.

Boom! Of the 1000+ replies I have received, this has to be in the top 5 if not nr 1.

You are spot on about our online socializing, before steemit I had not been on any social media in over 6yrs, Louise has FB but she never posts, only private messages to family & friends.

Whatever it was that pushed us towards steemit Is the same forces that are pushing us towards Freedom and liberty, and if we can tempt anyone here to follow in our footsteps then bit by bit our success will help fuel the revolution. (who knows)

Thank you for the interaction, I truly appreciate it.

Bless.

Love this thread from @markwhittam and @mackjez-santos, I never imagined that a social media platform would actually end up making me indirectly wiser, however comments such as these certainly bring a little enlightenment to the reader! I too will not be looking at the numbers (as much as I used to in the corporate world), The thing I like in this part of the conversation is that there is a feeling with steemit, I truly believe that the feeling we all have here is that it is really up to us all to make this platform and our experience here into a success, both for the individual and for all steemians (and hopefully others outside of this platform). This platform provides a true chance for ones own success to help others achieve success. That is the feeling I get here, I dont need metrics to measure it, I just need to make it happen! steemon steemians!

Thank you @starkerz, I appreciate the philosophy and effort that went into writing this comment, this is what steemit is all about.

We may have come here for the cash but I truly believe we will all walk away with a lot more than the queens head on some worthless IOU's

Thanks for the interaction.

See ya at the fest!

Numbers play a big role in everything we do.
It is good to study and stay informed

Yes, I agree some what, but connections pay a much bigger role than numbers in my humble opinion.

Thanks for the feedback :)

What I think of when I read this post is that success is relative.

Everyone has their own idea of what success is. It appears that most judge it by post payout, no surprise there. Though some dictate it by views or comments or maybe even the quality of the comments.

It is obvious that you care about a lot more than just payouts though in your short amount of time and posts you are making very high payouts relatively speaking.

I believe this is because your are very genuine, you have admirable values/morals and you genuinely care about other people.

Real people can feel this and thus support you. If anything you are a testament that even if money isn't the most important that putting values first can lead to money.

You are a fine example of a Steemian! Looking forward to getting to know you better and to see you at SteemFest!

Wow, Thanks Quinn!
What a truly genuine and thoughtful comment judging this post by the quality of the comments makes this very successful in my eyes.

I realized recently that the payout's are not what's driving me because not long ago I did a post that got over $100 but the comments and the feedback were not that great, for this reason I actually view that post as unsuccessful.

Its comments like these that keep pushing me, without feed back like this it would all be worthless.

I feel truly Blessed to have this interaction with you.

Bless.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I totally agree!

I too feel blessed to share this with you and I feel like we have had many of these exchanges. It is actually quite rare even here on Steemit to really go deep, to take the time to ponder and share honest and in depth perspectives with each other.

Yet for you it is standard practice and is one of the reasons I respect you and also like you so much!

You leave and respond with a lot of care and consideration. It is a truly respectable quality one of which I hope you inspire and bring out in many others!

How amazing it is to connect beyond money or material gain. To simply love and share the experience of being alive.

For me with every interaction I have with someone I intend to contribute something of real value. Wisdom, knowledge, insight, or just love and care in a truly genuine way.

Otherwise its not really worth commenting.....

Grateful to be connected with you and to share REAL value!

SteemOn to SteemFest!

In my opinion you are most successful in this community by achieving your esteemed only in170days.Thanks friend you become inspiration of the steemit community. Because of your hard work and dedication you have become successful. Congrats friend proud of you, wish you good luck and good health and happiness in life.

Wow, Thank you very much @maya7
I will never forget the support I have from people like you, it's this that drives me and gives me the will to continue this wonderful journey.

Thank you my dear friend.

Judging by numbers, you did very well, no doubt, but you're right to say that, in the end, there's always going to be someone with better stats. If you're in it just for the money, it shows and what you get is envy and resentment.
Better establish yourself as a member of a community, show interest in being part of it, find your voice in this community and this will get you respect. I'm very impressed with your level of engagement - over 2000 comments, that's quite a lot! Steem on! :)

Thank you @ladyrebecca

Yes, this is what success is built on.

Hahaha, it's funny this was the number I was most impressed with. Over 2000 comments Wow!!!!

Even the pope said that "trickle down" doesn´t work! 😘

That's because he's not on steemit....... Yet!!!!!

☺️

i couldn't agree more! and right now i feel quite unsuccessful as my engagement has been dropping quite a lot lately. still im not sure how to improve that! Thanks for this priority straghtening post!

Thank you @eco-alex, I must admit that my engagement has dropped a bit, but this is only due to me having a lot of projects going on at the same time as I imagine you have too.

Hello Mark,
You are absolutely correct, and i think this scenario applies in life as a whole and not just Steemit. You should never let other peoples success undermine your ability to achieve the same level of success or even more.

And one of the most important things in life are the relationships you build with people, the right connections that can get you places you never thought you reach.

All the best

Thank you @bobhaddad, you are so right this way of thinking goes beyond steemit, I was so focused on steemit I forgot about 'real life'

Thanks for the feedback.

Bless.

That's a great outlook and a perfect reminder to all who have recently joined. Unless you are wealthy already and can buy your way up the ladder, you simply have to work and wait and work some more. The trickle will begin and it will turn into a stream in time and eventually, a deluge. In the meantime, disregard the numbers, meet others, build life rafts together and simply paddle....we'll get there :)

Yes @tamaralovelace

Couldn't have said it better myself :)

This is absolutely true mate! Each one way of measuring success is completely different. For my case, I measure my success not on my post payouts but with the amount of comments I am getting. This gives me how well the post is being appreciated by the community.

Yes @progressivechef this is a great way to look at things, and it's a true reflection of a posts popularity.
