Ibis & Friends Breakfast Time

in #nature7 years ago

Look at this video I got of some Ibis and many other birds feeding at The Celery Fields in Sarasota, Florida.  There are so many because the water level in the pond went down and it became easier for the birds to catch the fish and other bugs that were in the pond.  This happens all the time at The Celery Fields.  We get lots of rain in the summer and the ponds and lakes fill up, then in the winter we don't get as much rain and the ponds dry up.  The birds take full advantage of this.

Here is a picture of an Ibis that I got. This is what Cornell Labs says about Ibis, " White Ibises gather in groups in shallow wetlands and estuaries in the southeastern United States. At each step, their bright red legs move through the water and their curved red bill probes the muddy surface below. As adults, these striking wading birds are all white save for their black wingtips, but watch out for young birds that are brown above and white below. White Ibises nest in colonies in trees and shrubs along the water's edge, changing locations nearly every year. "

Some of the other birds you see are Great Egrets.  They are the tall white ones.  They seem to be the first ones to arrive at feasts like this one.  I'm not sure how all the birds know that this is happening, they come from all over the county when this happens.  The birds must know something or communicate in a way that we don't understand.

The dark brown birds you see ate Glossy Ibis.  They look pretty much the same as the white, their color is the only big difference. I couldn't find any pictures that I had taken of a Glossy Ibis.  So, here is one of the other birds you see in the video, a Tri-colored Heron.  The best way to tell this bird apart from the others is the white stripe on it's long neck and white underparts.

Here is another shot of a White Ibis.  You can see an American Coot to the left.
