METRO: Last Light - Game Review
Hello Steemians.
For all the lovers of post-apocalyptic shooter games, I got a perfect game for you. If you played Stalker or Fallout you will definetly gonna love the Metro Last Light. This is a sequel from the first part, "Metro 2033", and you will find yourself in a war-torn countries of the ex Soviet Union, surviving in a cruel environment after the nuclear disasters, dealing with a great deal of anxiety in this dark atmospheres and shooting in everything that moves. The first part of metro 2033 was an unexpected success, becoming a hit right after a release based on a novel of the russian writer Dmitry Glukovsky, while the second part of Metro Last Light isn't based on some particular part of the book, it is a sequel of the first part and you will continue the story where the first part ends.
The story of the Metro series is about surviving after the global nuclear disaster, where we destroyed everything on our dear beloved planet Earth, and putting an end on a civilization that we used to know. So in Moscow, the capital city of Russia where the story is based, all the people that survived were inhabited the underground networks of tunnels that once been the Metro railway system.
The main character is called Artiom, as the part of elite group force "rangers" is fighting for survival in the underground settlements filled with infected animals, other militant groups, mutants and all kinds of monsters. Going on surface is a last resort, and considering that if you wanna stuck your nose out there, you will need heavy armor and a lot of guns, gas mask and the set of air filters essential for survival on the surface poisoned with deadly radiation.
In the first part of Metro 2033, the main danger is the mutated race called the "Dark Ones", humanoid beings with the ability of telepathy powers, which brings the fear and terror right into the bones of every resident in the underground city called Metro. So your role in the first part is to wipe out the entire race and kill every one of them telepathic monstrosities. But the knowledge that there is one being left and survived is all about in the second part of Metro: Last Light. So your mission as a "ranger" will be to find and kill that one remaining mutated being. But in all that entire fuss, Artiom will be drawn in all kinds of political manipulations that represents the danger of the entire community in the underground city.
The Metro Last Light is NOT an open world game. The story game will put you right where and when you need to be. So this may be a negative thing, limiting you to and giving you the freedom to explore the world. The world of Metro is divided by levels and you will explore it one by one. Sometimes with some help of NPC partner, you will stumble upon some bigger settlements and cities, and in that cases you will be given the opportunity to explore but the game will lead you most of the cases. The dark atmosphere and claustrophobic tunnels will give you chills through out of the game, and the story is filled with unexpected twists. The story will jump up from the main based missions, to stealth missions, to sudden action sequences where you will find yourself in a gunfight, through moments where the horror elements will give you chills right through the spine. In one moment you will plan your mission with well prepared squad of of armed to the teeth soldiers, and in one moment you will find yourself wandering in a swamp, and only things you will hear is your breathing through the gas mask, and your heartbeat racing when you hear the terrifying scream some monsters in the distance.
You will face some tough opponents, like giant spiders. Nobody likes giant spiders. Especially not me. And especially if they are bulletproof. Hell no. The only way you could kill this bad boys is when you flash them with your flashlight. In that moment they will reveal their vulnerable side, and make sure you fill them with some hard lead. But the problem is, the flashlight battery has limited power. You could charge up with some portable charger, but when you find yourself in sticky situation in limited space, then you are screwed.
There are all variety of guns and ammunitions that you can carry. the developers make sure that they do fine job of providing just that.
You can carry 3 types of guns, with different sets of knives, bombs, and other equipment for survival in that harsh environment.
You can chose from, shotguns, machine guns, through semi-automatic rifles to sniper rifles and guns. With every gun, you can upgrade some elements like silencer, optics, types of ammunitions. They make a fine job of authenticate that.
Instead of the money, they use an ammunition as a trading tokens. Army ammunition is far more valuable, and far more lethal and deadly as a regular ammunition, and it can serve as a trading instead of money. Of course regular ammunition you can find in much large quantities. you can buy with that gun upgrades, stronger ammunition and other equipment. But when you face a tougher opponent or you find yourself in a risky situation, you can use army ammunition to kill everything that stands at your way, and in that way you can survive the certain death.
Another big thing that will help you survive the certain death, and it is a big one, is of course a gas mask. Very important element in the game that will bring you the strong feeling of tension and anxiety is just that. When the rain drops on your gas mask and blurs your vision and you constantly cleaning the glass and the filter is almost drained, you are in a problem. When the filter is drained, and you start to lose your oxygen, you can hear the heavy breathing and heart racing, you are constantly in the state of claustrophobia. Your watch on your hand will give you a warning when your filter in the mask is almost drained, and in a last 10 to 15 seconds you will start to grasp for air, and get you in a panicking mode. I had a dream that I'm suffocating because of that. They did a really good job, of intensifying the atmosphere.
The Metro Last Light is also a stealth game, and if you are a fan of sneaking and doing a job like a ninja, you will have fun with this. But the problem is, they did a stealth gameplay almost to good, because, when you are in the shadows, not even the god will notice you. But i dont mind because the game could be in some moments just overwhelming. So I often use this to hide and just chill like an half an hour until I calm myself down.
I am not a really technical guy, but I can notice the graphics are pretty good and realistic. Lights and shadows are on a high level and basically visuals are just great. This is one great and awesome shooter game, but I will put an emphasis on the story and the atmosphere that this game brings. It is not some typical action Hollywood story crap that you see on daily basis, but there is quite of emotional stuff going on, and the story will may surprise you. After all, it is made by a book. So Enjoy this awesome game, I highly recommend it, and I hope that you enjoy this review too.
Until the next time, stay awesome.
I knew I'm gonna love this game.
Try it, it's awesome
