A trip to Orimattila

On the left you can see the old mill of Tönnö. The river is the River Porvoo, photographed downstream toward the south. In the lower right, you can see the roof of the electric generator building.

Here's an another photo I took in the village of Tönnö. Below is the school of Tönnö. It's a primary school (grades 1-6). My wife and I were seriously considering moving here three years ago.

@gamer00 and I were the only ones present at Salpauksen Saarto go club evening today. Both of us had our kids visiting grandparents. After a couple of games we decided to go somewhere to perhaps to take a few photographs. We ended up driving to Orimattila, a smalltown about 20 kms south of Lahti. We made a stop at the bridge and the mill of the village of Tönnö. (Enjoy the translation of the Wikipedia article on Tönnö by Google Translate.)

As @gamer00 already mentioned in his account of the evening, I forgot a beer bottle in the freezer in the club room. It was there for hours. As a result, the beer froze and caused the disintegration of the vessel it was contained in. The top half of the bottle had come off completely and the bottom half had split from top to bottom. The beer itself had turned into sticky slush and was in one piece for the most part. Luckily, since cleaning the entire content of the bottle from the walls and the freezing elements each made from a mesh of several pipes for the coolant to flow in would have been an unpleasant chore. @gamer00 rang me from the club room when I had already driven off to tell me about the beer explosion. We cleaned the mess and laughed it off.

That's amazing pic. Orimattila looks like a decent town, would be cool to visit someday. Upvoted!

It's pretty nice, but don't bother going to the Orimattila centre, it's just dull.

Yeah, Orimattila in general is not much to write home about. It does have a very large church, though. It's got the longest midship of all the churches in the province. Orimattila has only about 15,000 inhabitants. But it's quite large geographically, spanning about 40 kilometres from east to west and about 20 kms from south to north.

Strangely, Asikkala to the north of Lahti also has a very large church. Asikkala is about three times smaller in terms of population than Orimattila. For some reason, the people of the Päijänne Tavastia Region have considered the economic sacrifice of building such large stone churches worthwhile in past centuries.
