The Compound Effect

in #steemit6 years ago

In this post I am going to try to sum up and write everything you need to learn and implement from the book "The Compound Effect" written by Darren Hardy. Let's get down to business.

I want you to imagine three guys: John, Michael and David.

John decides to do nothing different with his life over the course of 31 months. He simply keeps living the same life he is used to and doesn't think about changing something up or stepping out of his comfort zone.

Michael buys the TV and starts watching all sorts of cooking channels all day long. He isn't proactive nor motivated to try and do something that would benefit him in the long run.

David makes a decision that he is going to read 10 pages a day and cut 125 calories a day, because he was told that it would make a significant difference and mean a lot after some time.

AFTER THE COURSE OF 31 MONTHS:

John becomes sad because he didn't really grow as a person and as an individual. He feels like as if he just wasted past 31 months.

Michael who made negative choices gained 14 kilograms, his wife became angry because he isn't really trying to make things better and their relationship started to fall apart.

David has lost 14 kilograms, he became fitter and healthier and maybe even prolonged his life expectancy. He also got promoted at work because of all the knowledge he has soaked up by reading 10 pages a day, I know you may be thinking something like "10 pages a day for a promotion? That's ridiculous."
Well, let's see what math has to say about it.
If there is on average 30 days a month that means that our boy, David has read 300 pages a month. 300 pages times 31 equals 9300 pages. Quite a few quality books, right?

What the writer of this book is trying to say is that small, smart choices can over time bring you a lot of great stuff.
You must start with taking responsibility (stop blaming others: government, environment , people around you etc.)

He also talks about the momentum. Imagine a rocket, it spends almost 80% of it's fuel to take off of the ground. But once it's up there it doesn't need much fuel.
Implemented to the David's example it means that the first month it's going to take David a lot of energy to read those 10 pages. But later, it just becomes easier and easier until he has finally formed that habit and doesn't even think about it anymore. He just wakes up and reads 10 pages with a satisfaction.

When it comes to people around you. Darren Hardy says that you shouldn't or maybe better said mustn't let people make an influence on you with their negative thoughts on life and current situation. It's better to try and distance yourself from these people and surround yourself with good, positive people who are striving to achieve some goals and have that positive view of life that means so much.

After processing that idea, the first thing that came to my mind is the golden rule:
"You are an average of the five people you spend the most time with." and when you think about it, you realise that it's 100% completely true.

When I'm around person who is motivated to go out and exercise, I get the will power and we go to the gym and have a great workout. After some time, I'd form a habit of working out thanks to this person. On the other hand, if I am spending time with someone who is always complaining and not willing to do anything to change something up, I'd probably become the same. People like this just drain your energy away and all the sudden you are feeling the same way as them. My school friend curses a lot. After 2-3 weeks of spending a lot of time with him, people around me realised that I've started to use curse words way more than before I have met him.

Darren Hardy finishes the book with this amazing quote by Jim Rohn:
"Don't wish it was easier, wish you were better."

I hope these tips are going to help you. Make sure you didn't just read them, try implementing them in your life as soon as possible! You will see significant improvements in your life.
