History
Before Photoshop, the images were manipulated with techniques such as overexposure, to create special effects used for various purposes: postcards gift, narrative illustrations, advertising campaigns, political propaganda. Despite the techniquesrudimentary, the result was still astonishing.
Photography and propagand in the URSS
Cinema and photography began to show all their strength and political effectiveness in the 1920s and 30s, by totalitarian regimes, which, together with radio, painting and others propaganda means, they were widely used to spread it in a capillary manner the ideology of the party in power. After the October Revolution, the nascent Soviet Union also took advantage of the propaganda of images. One of the most celebrated photographs of the time depicts Lenin who, from the tribune, arring the crowd; while on the side are clearly visible Trotsky and Kamenev, close collaborators of Lenin.
Stalin and the Water Transportation Commissioner, Nicolai Yezhov, executed in 1940 and
condemned to the photographic "damnatio memoriae".
Mikhail Rozulevich, took more than 300 photos from the Soviet state archive and fused it to a picture of about 21m. of width, to celebrate the 15 years of the Russian Revolution.

I did not know you can do that with overexposure. Excellent post.
if I'm not mistaken it's also an easy-to-use technique, nowadays with the help of software like Photoshop it's even more
