This is my entry into this month’s PHC Top 3 contest.

This months topic is Kids TV Shows

Believe it or not, I grew up without a TV for most of my childhood. My parents bought a TV when I was a young teen and I still remember how that changed our family dynamic - not for the better in my opinion. We used to always have dinner together and play board games afterward or do some crafts, read or be read to.
After the TV came into the house, it was more often than not time to watch TV after we ate. My father wanted to watch the news and us kids whatever we could.
The only saving grace was that programming didn't start until 4 or 5 in the afternoon and ended at 11 pm. I am pretty sure I remember right that there were maybe three channels.

When I became a mom myself, I remembered how much the TV had influenced the family life and for most of the time my kids were growing up, we didn't have a TV. Or if we had one, it was hidden in a closet or under a beautiful cloth and only brought out if we really wanted to watch something.

That said, there are a few shows I remember watching as a child, mostly, because they were the only ones available, but I still remember them.

My Nominations are:

Nomination Number one

Flipper

My Reasons for the Nomination

Flipper was just fascinating for us. What a smart dolphin that always knew what was up. Him and Lassie were the top animals we knew about LOL.
And seeing the ocean and such different surroundings from what we had around us was also fascinating.

Nomination Number Two

Bonanza

My Reasons for the Nomination

Again, there weren't that many shows available, but the Wild West was endlessly fascinating to us. So different from any countryside or lifestyle we had around us. And Little Joe was mighty fine.
This fascination was a bit fueled by the Karl May books a lot of German kids read at that time and Bonanza gave the books even more of a boost.

Nomination Number Three

Mister Roger

My Reasons for the Nomination

Now, we are skipping to my kids' TV watching. Mr. Rogers was one of the shows I allowed them to watch once in a while and I enjoyed it right along with them. What a kind man and a sweet way to teach about inclusiveness and also about making sense of the world. I am glad that he lives on in Daniel Tiger and that my grandkids like that show - and that they also grow up in households where the TV is more off than on.

Thanks for a classic roundup of choices! It really is interesting to see how family dynamics change with continued progression of technology. Though I think the smart phones are one of the biggest challenges for family meals and interaction. Now you don't even need a television to watch shows when they are right at your fingertips on the phone or tablet screen!

Excellent choices, @mariannewest! I remember all those shows, and many more, because I grew up in a rather opposite way - we had MANY televisions in our house. Of course, since my father owned a small chain of stores called, "Cape Ann TV" when I was little, and sold televisions, stereos, and the like, it's not that surprising... 😊

Sounds like you had a beautiful childhood, and returned the favor to your children. Thanks for sharing the awesomeness. ❤️

Yay! Glad you made it in time! Especially with such great, classic choices! Though it was a bit before my time, I still remember growing up watching re-runs of Bonanza at my grandmother's house because she LOVED any kind of Westerns. She had a big crush on John Wayne of course, but any show or film in that genre was in her wheelhouse. Flipper is a great choice, as well, since for many of us that might have been the first look at an actual dolphin! And of course I'm so happy someone finally put out Mr. Rogers. It wouldn't have been a complete set of choices without that one. He really set such a fine example in many ways. Thanks for joining us again!

Don't remember any of the shows mentioned here on our local show, perhaps not broadcast, never mentioned by my son's.

Do remember growing up without TV at all, always ate at the dinning room table, time for discussions and debates, or questioned over schooling progress. A very different, and I agree perhaps more stable way of life.

Hi Marianne! I've had some trouble with discord and lost all my invites and memberships there. You invited me to @powerhousecreatives some time ago and I wasn't ready for the responsibility at that time but I could do it now. If you still feel like I would be a good fit, would you please extend that invite again? I've lost access to all the discord channels I was on.

I hope all is swell for you today and everyday.

I will find out if they are open right now to accept new people. I'll send you a link to the invite post as soon as I find one.

I went to @jaynie and found it. I applied. but thanks! I'm sorry I didn't apply the last time, but I was too overwhelmed to figure out discord at that time, which stymies me, all this talk about drops and channels and what not. Thanks for your support!

Hey @mariannewest

Great choices. I have watched Flipper and Bonanza before, although not for a while. Both classics.

I don't know Mister Roger. I will have to look that one up.

Good luck.

Gaz

I vaguely remember Bonanza hahaha
I remember running back from church on Sundays to catch Little House On The Prairie
Then there was The Love Boat, The Waltons, Good Times, Incredible Hulk, Wonder Woman, Six Million Dollar Man, ChiPs, Charlies Angels, Different Strokes, The Jefferson (Fish Don't Fry in the Kitchen).... so many, so manyyy....

But TV Shows for kids then it has to be Sesame Street and then Electric Company and The Muppet Show :)
