An Unexpected Shout Out
Yesterday, I opened our Instagram account and saw this little notice that lets you know that somebody tagged you in a post.
I followed the call and ended up on the page of the lovely folks form Zeal Sustainable Living.
And would you know it, they wrote a blog post about their favorite 12 podcasts around the theme of sustainable living!!
And we were one of them!
So proud and happy!
Thank you! Zeal Sustainable Living!!!!!
Why Does an Unexpected Compliment Feel So Good?
Often, we receive praise for a particular effort. We submit a paper to a teacher. It took many hours to write and lots of research and when we hand it in, we are reasonably sure that it is good.
The teacher gives it back with a good great and some words of praise. This feels good, right? But we almost expect to get that outcome. Actually, I think we would be disappointed if we didn't get it.
Or we participate in a contest or a race. We win. We get lots of praise and we are happy. But again, we put in x amount of energy to get the result - the win and the praise. It kind of is expected.
I don't know about you, but the completely unexpected compliments seem to be just a bit sweeter. For example, you love to garden and spend lots of energy and experimentation in your front yard.
You are doing this for yourself. To satisfy your sense of beauty or functionality - not to get in a Better Home and Garden Magazin or win some sort of a price.
Then, one day, you are at the checkout at the market and you hear two people in front of you talk about that garden they have seen and liked. As they keep talking, you realize they are speaking about your garden. They describe details of the yard you spend a lot of time bringing into form and tell each other how much they like them.
Imagine.
Doesn't that feel good?
I think part of the unexpected compliment being so powerful is that there are no attachments. It is a bonus. It is like winning a lottery we didn't even enter to play.
