Do you Know This Plant?

Do you know this plant?
Think Southern California.
Think pollinator.
Think bees love it.
Think the plant will lead up to this flower for 12 years.
Think the plant will die after this display.
But no worries - it made lots of babies up to this point.

Sort:

I have seen it before but I have no clue what it is. Funnily I have a sweet memory of its smell.

It's an Agave :)

Ah ok, I must have seen them here in Costa Rica then. Here are plenty.

It's also right at the tip of my tongue but I just can't remember. I bet my mom has one or many in her yard in Southern California but I just can't seem to pull it out of my memory. So familiar though.

I am sure your mom has one in her yard :) an agave

OH my gosh yes she has a ton of them! They just don't flower often so I guess that's what makes it hard to recognize. I even have 2 here in Colorado inside my greenhouse. They are amazingly hardy... I mean they wouldn't make it outside here but they can handle freezing for sure.

They are interesting. And the flower is so big and unusual.....

Is that an agave plant in flower? Are the babies the little offsets around the main plant, or do you see some plants setting vegetatively on the stem, too?

It is an agave. The babies are not on the flower stalk, but I have a huge plant in the back and they set on the stem as well. I'll try to get a picture of that. The ones along the street I keep just to one big plant close to the ground - they are my "catch the dirt from the street" plants:)

It's so cool when agaves get little new plants along their stem. It seems so unusual. Good luck with all your agave babies! :D
