The Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar of Saragossa is an important baroque temple of Spain.

According to tradition, this is the first Marian temple of Christendom, since it preserves and venerates the pillar - in fact, a column of jasper - which, according to tradition, was laid by the Virgin Mary who, still living in Jerusalem, would have appeared in mortal flesh to the apostle James on January 2, 40. Documentaryly there is no evidence of what is recorded in tradition, the details of which date back to 1297 - in a bull of Pope Boniface VIII - and 1299 - a statement Of Jurados de Saragossa, where for the first time the invocation of "Santa Maria del Pilar" was witnessed, after having undertaken in 1293 the bishop Hugo de Mataplana a rehabilitation of the building that threatened ruin, thanks to the donations propitiated by the mentioned Pope
